U.S. Southcom Sends Guatemalans South

The Minister of National Security John Saldivar informed the media on Wednesday that the construction of the military facility at Hunting Caye had not been stopped. Hours later, on Wednesday evening, a release from the US Embassy defended the decision to hire Guatemalans to build the Coast Guard installation, calling it best value. But that was Wednesday. News Five has confirmed that first thing this morning, the US Southern Command, through the local Military Liaison Office, issued a stop order to BINARQ-the Guatemalan firm constructing the base. We have confirmed with the Belize Coast Guard that upon receipt of the stop order, all Guatemalans on Hunting Caye departed the premises on their own vessel, presumably headed to Puerto Barrios in Guatemalan territory. We note though that those persons have left their tools and construction equipment on the site. News Five reached out to all pertinent government officials for comment today, including the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Security and the Minister of Immigration and Security. The only one who deigned to respond was the Prime Minister, but only to inform us that he is out of the country.

I think you have it wrong Rod. I thought we had been sold by the previous administrator to Guatemala, remember the song that we no wa no guatemala, was song by the current government. Guess they really knew what they wanted. But i guess there are other issues to this coin that we do not know and there only when we understand the entities involved in the contract will u know the real truth. Sometimes a country independence is being discussed by third parties and not necesarrily the 2 countries that may have a difference.

  3. Hatari says:

This entire matter is ridiculous. We are given an important military base that we could never have afforded to build on our own and what do we do, complain when the US followed their required guidelines and awarded the contract to the most qualified bidder. I wonder if any Belizean contractors even submitted a bid? And if so, could they have actually built the facility on time and to spec. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth!

  4. Uncle Benji says:

People wake up and smell the coffee. It is brewing and it smells nasty, very nasty. Why are Belizeans so naïve? Why Lord? Why do you treat us as fool fool pipil? I guess maybe we are, and that is why we know nothing of:

Jan 10 2014 – Hulse enetered into a deal with the Guatemalans knowing that they would be allowed into the country with temporary work permits. Hulse needs to come clean and tell us about his meeting Carlos Raul Morales of the current Guatemalan government.

What about “CENDEPESCA” ? Can Hulse talk to us about the Cendepesca deal? or the “ZGAS” deal?

Belize belongs to Guatemala. Enough said. If you don’t believe me, then ask Barrow about his under handed deals or have Hulse come clean.

We are waiting. “El Ojo Te Ve.”

  5. CEO says:

We have so many Belizeans out of work and we are importing wokers who I am sure are not paying any taxes on the earnings in Belize.

Those that are suppose to lead us just stand aside and allow this kind of crap to happen. One said he did not know who the Contractor was and the other said he new but said nothing. Can you believe this crap.

This is no PUP – UDP comment this is plain and simple wrong regardless who is at the helm!
