Senator Shoman Blasts G.O.B. for Skewed Priorities

Lisa Shoman

There’s been much said about the Coast Guard’s Guatemalan constructed forward operating base on Hunting Caye amid furious anti-Guatemalan sentiment in the wake of the murder of Danny Conorquie, the armed incursion and threat to our B.D.F. soldiers. The debate has raged in the House of Representatives, on the airwaves, in private forums and on the streets. And yes, it also erupted in the Senate on Wednesday. Opposition Senator Lisa Shoman, always good for some serious body blows – took a shot at government priorities in the name of nationalism…stating that it is time to get rid of the hams, and to buy a helicopter.

Lisa Shoman, P.U.P. Senator

“The time has come for us to examine our budget and to cut the ham and buy helicopter; to cut the mortgage forgiveness and buy materials; to stop with the giving away of turkeys and to provide our armed forces and our law authorities with the tools that they need…tools Mister President, not turkey, is what we need to defend our national security. We have to support the Friends of Conservation and Development. We have to effectively exercise our territorial integrity in all of Belize and we can abandon no part of it. Not if it is El Pilar, not if it is Cadenas, not if it is Jalacte, Santa Cruz and we have to act in a way that is multi-partisan and is cooperative. We have to be aware Mister President of our national dignity and we have to stop paying only lip service to our national dignity. I don’t want anybody to tell me that I have no right to complain because a Guatemalan company is building in my country—not for something as important as a coast guard base. And I want to know because Belizeans want to know Mister President, and it is good that we have the minister here. We want to know from the Minister of Immigration and Labour whether these persons even have legal status and work permits to be operating in our country because the only hope we have is to obey our national laws, to stand upon our national dignity to do right by our nation, our people, our country.”

That question to Minister of Immigration and Labour Godwin Hulse has now become moot, with the news that this morning all Guatemalans at Hunting Caye left on the strength of a stop order issued by the US.

I think Lisa Shoman has said it very right and I like her for that. But i also ask her, can she put some of the millions she has made in the past or is currently doing for this purpose, without offending her or even wanting to sue for this comment.
