Amendments to Firearms Act Passed…More on the Way

Godwin Hulse

Today, the Senate met and with government’s majority, approved amendments to the Firearms Control Act, the Gun Control Act and the Legal Profession Act. Where the Firearms Act is concerned, there has been some concern that the amendments are not as comprehensive as they should be. Senator Hulse today told News Five that there have been in-depth discussions on the Firearms Act, and full knowledge in Cabinet that much more needs to be done to address all concerns about the Firearm and Gun Control Acts. The bills passed today are just the first steps.

Godwin Hulse, Minister of Immigration & Labour

“Today’s bill is if you like it an incremental move forward. The Minister of National Security and the police, especially the police, are adamant that look man, unu can’t tie wi hands behind wi back. I am here to tell you when the kid John Avilez was shot that night and family and friends who knew his parents and knew the kid were rallying around at the hospital, the police were saying, minister we noh want wi hand tie; we could do this and we could do that. But there is a delicate balance—protecting the rights of people, but at the same time making sure that you ketch the criminals. And we don’t want to send the a signal that says well look bwai we di hands off unu or at the same token by everybody frightened that they may go to jail. That is why the amendment deh deh and I can tell you that a further amendment is coming to allow the bail before a magistrate because that is where the mischief is. But let’s be real man, if a gun is found in your position or weh yo live and it is illegal, the police have a right to take some action. Ih can’t just say well oh unu noh the investigate; it deh ina yo house or it deh ina yo vehicle or somewhere. You must got something to say. And the law doesn’t presume a guilt. It says you are presumed to be in possession and then there is evidence to prove whether you are or are not.”

Hulse says that the amendment which will address the discretion of the magistrate to grant bail should be introduced in the House as early as the next sitting.

    Hulse, #4 in Ali’s forty.

Keep the lips moving, and the lies flowing.

Someday you will get to #3!

Why the heck Belize always have to re-invent the wheel with every move they make.

All these mistakes have been made by others can’t we learn from the mistakes of others?
