3 men arraigned for murder of Harrison Smith

Harrison Smith

Three murders in three days…on Thursday, twenty-seven year old food vendor Gerald Palmer was shot and killed on Grants Alley by a lone gunman who opened fire on him during a nationwide blackout. Grant’s murder was followed by the slaying of Harrison Smith on Friday and the fatal shooting of Lincoln Sabido, about twenty-six hours later on Saturday night. Turning to the murder of Harrison Smith; he was violently gunned down at the corner of North Front and Pickstock Streets just after eight o’clock on Friday night. Within hours, three men from the Pinks Alley area were charged and this morning they were arraigned for Smith’s murder. But the family of one of detainees has showed News Five video surveillance placing her brother at a restaurant at the same time the shooting took place three blocks away.  Duane Moody has this story.

Duane Moody, Reporting

As News Five Live was wrapping up on Friday, there were several shooting incidents in the Old Capital. Sometime after eight p.m., thirty-two year old Harrison Smith was riding on North Front Street. As he reached its intersection with Pickstock Street, two men riding on separate bicycles opened fire on him. Smith was rushed to the K.H.M.H., but succumbed within hours. Twenty-three year old Eustace Lewis was also injured in the shooting.

Raphael Martinez, Police Press Officer

“Police visited the K.H.M.H. where they saw two persons suffering from varying degrees of injuries. The first being thirty-two year old Harrison Smith of a Police Street Address and the second was twenty-three year old Eustace Lewis of a West Collet Canal address. Harrison Smith received several apparent gunshot wounds to the body and again unfortunately just about nine-forty-five p.m., he succumbed to his injuries; Lewis remained in a stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.”

Immediately following the shooting, police went to Chon Sing Restaurant at the corner of North Front Street and Majestic Alley. There, they rounded up several persons socializing at the establishment. Three of them: twenty-six year old Bart Lucas twenty-six year old Daniel Cain and eighteen year old Oscar Flores were today arraigned for the murder before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith. The men were remanded to prison until November sixth, but according to Lucas’ sister, Neomi, her younger brother is innocent.

Neomi Lucas, Sister of Accused

“He was at Chon Sing. I am comfortable with this, I am confident of this because beside what is on the video, he is hanging out with people who he knows from around the neighborhood. Chon Sing restaurant; they usually social there.”

Duane Moody

“That aside, I understand that police officers were patrolling in the area during the duration of this time and even these persons have not come forward to claim the innocence of your brother.”

“You know, I don’t expect that these officers that were on patrol will just willfully come forward. They are brothers of the other police officers who are trying to make this case stick. As much as I would say that they were here, it is possible for them; they have the ability because of their knowledge. They were patrolling around here; they were rubbing shoulders with them because that’s a part of their police duties. When you are patrolling the community, you have to rub shoulders with them and the lure of Chon Sing, they can use the restroom facility, they are in an air-conditioned building; they can buy their water.”

Neomi has been doing her groundwork. With the assistance of the proprietors of the restaurant, she showed us, minute by minute play, of her brother at the restaurant at the time of the shooting. He was dressed in a blue jeans, white shirt and a black do-rag on his head…all captured on surveillance camera before the shooting and after nine p.m. when he along with several others, was detained by police officers.

“My lawyer, Kareem Musa, has advised me that I would have to do some groundwork which I have been doing over the weekend. Physically locate the police officers who were doing the foot patrol, who were in the establishment and I am going to use the video footage. I have them on camera around and about the place; the same place my brother was, they were in there. So I have to round them up and I need to ask them, you don’t remember you saw my brother there? See if they could say you know, I wrote down his name in my note book; he was sitting at the bar and they could help authenticate what the video is saying, you know.”

According to Police Press Officer, Raphael Martinez, investigators will take all evidence into consideration.

Raphael Martinez

“I am pretty sure that police will leave no stone unturned. And if that is one of the evidence that would prove whether or not he was indeed a part of the gunmen or the persons who fired shots, that would definitely be looked upon by the people investigating this latest shooting incident.”

However, for the family, Bart’s name will forever be tarnished even after he is proven innocent of the charge.

Neomi Lucas

“It is a bell that cannot be un-rung. You can’t un-ring that bell. He will always be known as somebody who was charged for murder. And besides that, you won’t have people who will look at the whole picture. They will only heard his name being called and they will chalk it up to a regular black bwai from through the ghetto; dah mussi he do it.”

Duane Moody for News Five.

Seven, nine millimeter shells were recovered from the scene. Back in 2007, Smith was charged with the murder of car washer, forty-seven year old Lionel Welcome aka “Sleepy”, who was stabbed fatally to the heart near the Belize Bank. In 2006, he was accused of the murder of Renato Logan at Taylor’s Alley. In both cases, Smith was freed of the charges.

The old saying “you live by the sword you die by the sword” is true. This man supposedly killed two people and walked away free, well he paid the ultimate just as he did to others so it was done unto him.
