3 Cops Arraigned on Criminal Charges

Jefferson Dawson

In a cleansing of the police department, three police officers were before the court today to answer to criminal offenses.  First to be arraigned were two alleged rogue cops who have been fingered for attacking Belize City resident, Tramane Ciego. They are police constables Jefferson Gilbert Dawson of Belize City and Eber Depaz, of San Andres Village, Corozal Town.  This morning, the two cops were transported by their peers in a police vehicle and taken for arraignment. Depaz is facing two charges and Dawson is accused of four. The cops were jointly charged with one count of robbery on Tramane Ciego. Allegations are that on September twenty-eight, by use of force, and while armed, both cops stole four hundred dollars from Ciego.

They were also jointly charged with a second count for Wounding Ciego. Dawson is facing additional charges for Aggravated Assault with a Firearm and Using Threatening Words. In court, both officers pleaded not guilty to all charges; bail was denied and Dawson and Depaz were remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until November twentieth. Ciego claims he was assaulted by a pair of officers who approached him with a firearm, searched him and then beat him up. He alleges that he was pushed into the canal along with his fry chicken and soft drink that he had just purchased. Ciego said he told the officers he is no trouble maker and that he has a clean police record, but that did not matter to them. The cops were represented by attorney, Richard “Dickie” Bradle before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith.

  1. Miguel Castillo says:

Isn’t it funny that most suspects with serious charges tend to use Dickie Bradley as their lawyer… Most of the time they get off… I wonder why???? Food for thought.
