FCIB Organizes Cancer Walk

Everyone has or knows someone that has been afflicted with cancer. Over the years it has become even more prevalent in Belize regardless of age or gender. The Belize Cancer Society has been actively working along with the health institutions for years promoting awareness and the importance of carrying out screening tests. CIBC FirstCaribbean Bank is organizing a cancer walk on Saturday as a fundraiser to help BCS. It’s the bank’s third annual Walk for the Cure and Business Support Officer, Rosanna Villanueva, spoke to News Five about the event.

“Our parent company CIBC FirstCaribbean in Canada has a huge walk that they have been doing for many years and they raise millions of dollars each year. So being our parent company, they have asked us to kinda take on the same initiative for our territories. So for Belize we are having our walk on this Saturday, fourth October, and all the funds raised through fundraising activities, through registration for the walk, everything will go towards the Belize Cancer Society.”

“Tell us about people wanting to participate; how they can do so and at what cost?”

“Well the registration cost is twenty dollars per person and we still have room for persons who want to register. When you register for the walk, you get a free T-shirt and we do have some shirts left so anybody that wants to register now and get a shirt, they can. You can still walk without a shirt; that’s fine. But as I said, all the funds raised for registration also goes towards the Belize Cancer Society. Each year, we’ve seen participation go up, inch up as well as funds raised. This year, we are expecting to top what we did last year in both number of workers and funds raised. We have our corporate partners, Bowen and Bowen Limited, who joined us this year; they made a very generous contribution towards the cause and they are also sending a team of their employees to walk with us. So we are really happy to have them, we are proud to have them walking with us. So we are expecting upwards of about eighty to a hundred walkers this year, which will surpass what we did last year and we are also looking at raising, hopefully doubling what we did last year. But we will know what the end, when we tally up all the funds raised.”

“Other companies can join in?”

Rosanna Villanueva

“Yes, unfortunately, our timeline was a bit short this year, but we do have the option for other corporate partners who want to join with us—they can make a contribution to the cause. They can do it either directly to the cancer society or they can do it to us and of course we will of course acknowledge them and they can also send a team of their employees to walk with us. You know, the more the merrier. And we are really looking forward to it though.”

This Saturday, you are encouraged to join in the walk.

    Ha! Ha!

FCIB on damage control after their major blunder of forbidding their former employee from speaking here native tongue.

Too little too late FCIB! It will take a mighty long time for you to regain the trust, respect and confidence of Belizeans again.

Your head office needs to fire The Jamaican and her boss, Mr. Smith in Belize City who endorsed the discriminatory policy.
