P.M. Barrow Comments on Beleaguered GSU…

Mark Flowers

The GSU, or more specifically GSU commander Mark Flowers, have been in the news almost nightly. The elite, aggressive unit has been under fire after allegations of excessive force and unnecessary brutality. The Prime Minister has publicly endorsed the GSU in glowing terms. So today we took the opportunity to ask him about the less than glowing allegations. According to the PM, he will speak to the Minister of National Security about the allegations made against GSU head, Mark Flowers, personally.

“But in those cases because Mark Flowers is well known—his face is all over the place—and in at least two of these cases, he was identified by the complainants.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“Then I would only say did the complainants make a formal report to the police? Then that…”

“However, he is an inspector. So it is a public services’ matter…he cannot be investigated by the Professional Standards Branch.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“Is it that they are accusing him personally or his officers? Well again, if there are those sorts of allegations, nobody is beyond being investigated or being asked to answer. Whatever the process is then that process should be followed. So again I will have a word with the minister. I will tell you, I don’t know of those particular circumstances, but I think Mark Flowers, while he is a hard-charging police officer, I think him also to be a very bright police officer and I find it difficult to find how he would put himself in circumstances where he could be busted so easily. So I don’t know the facts and I will therefore refrain from commenting on whether the allegations have merit. But if formal reports have been made, then those reports need to be processed, need to be investigated.”

“But aren’t you creating a sort of dangerous situation that you are giving him some sort of insulation in so far as you have twice endorsed him and said that you all are bolstering the ranks of the GSU…so then.”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“Mark Flowers isn’t the GSU man and while I’ve said and will continue to say I think him to be an outstanding police officer; outstanding people do wrong things and if—I don’t care who it is—if it turns out that there s merit to the complaints, then the inevitable consequence will have to follow.”
