Police Constable Oscar Ramirez Charged with Extortion

Oscar Ramirez

On Tuesday, Darius Martinez from Dangriga started an eighteen month conviction for Corrupting a Public Officer. But there is another cop in the hot seat. He is Oscar Ramirez assigned to the San Pedro Police Formation, who is under investigation for an allegation of extortion. A seventeen year old is alleging that on September twenty-two, PC Ramirez extorted his family for the release of his mother, Mirna Judith Berganza who was detained at the San Pedro Police Station for traffic offences. According to the minor Ramirez wanted a total of one thousand dollars, but that his family paid six hundred dollars. The thirty-six year old officer has been charged for the crime of Extortion. Assistant Superintendent Rivero told the media of the number of officers under investigation.

ASP Glen Rivero, Commander, Professional Standards Branch

“Since this week, we have dealt with a police officer in San Pedro for extortion; he went before the court.  We have Mr. Darius Martinez who has been convicted in the magistrates’ court for suppression of evidence that is against a member of our police department.  So, like I said we have a zero tolerance as it pertains corruption.  The perception of brotherhood in the police department, I want the public to know that as it relates to corruption, as it relates to abuse that will not be condoned.  There’s no such brotherhood when it comes to corruption and abuse.  So that perception I want it to be erased, the Professional Standards Branch as long as a matter is reported, it will be investigated and the person responsible will be dealt with when the evidence is gathered. Like I said, that matter was investigated; those officers will be facing the court for whatever injuries they caused to him. They are before the police tribunal for offenses against discipline.”

“Sir tell us about the first incident we discussed saying that…you only told us that they got disciplinary. What the process?”

ASP Glen Rivero

“The disciplinary process, we got the tribunal system for the police department. Those officers have been charged disciplinary. The two officers in terms of Mister Bailey was charged for being uncivil jointly whilst on duty. One of the officers was additionally charged for the act of prejudice and that is as it relates to Mister Bailey’s injuries. Those charges upon conviction, they can be discharged from the police department. They can also be fined up to two hundred dollars. And like I said, the investigation does not stop there. The matter of criminal charges is also being looked at.”
