Another Cop Busted for Handling Stolen Goods

ASP Glen Rivero

Earlier this afternoon, another officer was arrested and detained pending criminal charges after he was found in possession of a number of stolen items believed to have been lifted during a search conducted at a residence in Belize City.  According to a woman, a team of officers entered her home and proceeded to conduct a search.  When the exercise was finished she noticed that several pieces of jewelry were missing.  She immediately made a report and the internal affairs department sprang into action.  Soon thereafter, they made a  break in the case and it involves one of their own.  While ASP Rivero refused to reveal the identity of the officer, he told the media that charges were expected to be brought against him by day’s end.

“I also want to update that there is a case that occurred today where we received information from a young lady who claims that her house was searched and some jewelries went missing. That matter was pursued and the team that went to her house was immediately gathered and they were informed that none of the team members should leave. One of the member left and we pursued him and we ended up arresting him and a young lady with the jewelries. He will be charged for that and also for using a motorcycle not covered under third party risk insurance and not registered. Like I said, we have a zero tolerance for corruption, for abuse and we are pursuing all matters. This person is a police constable, he is presently in detention in our cell and he will be taken before the court before this day is over.”

“Are you at liberty to divulge his identity and his rank?”

ASP Glen Rivero

“Not at this time. I will ask our public relation officer to disclose his identity after we have completed our process within the report. Hopefully they can also capture his photograph. If he is found guilty, then he will be dismissed from the police department. Again, this is a joint effort between the Professional Standards Branch and Precinct two officers. The officer is a part of a team that is being conducting operation within our city. They were drawn from different precinct. And like I said, sometimes it is one or two officers that cause a black eye to our department and we will get to them.”

“When these processes are ongoing, are these officers on interdiction, are they suspended, are they removed from their posts?”

ASP Glen Rivero

“The process of interdiction that rests solely on the shoulder of the commissioner of police. He looks at the cases and it depends on the severity of the offense; then he goes and interdicts these officers. Presently we have some eighteen to nineteen police officers on interdiction and definitely I can tell you that from the cases we have discussed, that these officers will be placed on interdiction.”

All be told, there is a total of about eighteen officers, including ACP Miguel Segura, on interdiction for various offences.
