Mayor Bradley On Street Improvements

Mayor Darrell Bradley has a lot on his mind, with critical decisions to be made where sanitation contracts are concerned. But he’s always to find a bright spot where infrastructure in the city is concerned. There’s no doubt that the work on Belize City streets has been the cause of much frustration, but there’s work being done, constantly, and that’s a good thing. Today Mayor Darrell Bradley gave News Five an update on construction underway, and also construction planned for the immediate future.

“The work on Central American Boulevard is proceeding quite nicely. The contractor, Cisco Construction, works very closely with the municipality…of course that’s a central government funded project – in terms of whatever issues we may have, ensuring that the work was ready for Carnival, there was no disruption there. It was very, very nice. That project is going ahead of schedule so we expect that we are going to have it fully completed by early next year. One of the things that you’re also seeing that they are also doing along Princess Margaret Drive which is the City Council’s project is that they’re putting along the green belt, because we’re trying to make the infrastructure multi-functional. We’re not only thinking about the street…we’re thinking about safety, we’re thinking about proper signage, proper sleeping-policemen on the various roads including Seashore Drive right behind us, and we’re also ensuring that the street has appropriate greening, so in the medians along Central American Boulevard and Princess Margaret Drive and other areas as well including the area behind me on Seashore Drive, so we are ensuring that on all fronts it is a good use of public funds.”

“And other works being undertaken?”

Darrell Bradley

“Of course we are finishing up on the section of Princess Margaret Drive from the Coney Drive roundabout to the Flag Monument roundabout. We are going to do that street between Princess Margaret Drive and St. Thomas Street which abuts the Social Security Board and the hospital. Those are areas that we want to do, I think that’s a portion of St. Joseph. We’re going to get started right now on Cleghorn Street, Slaughterhouse Road. We’re going to do Blue Marlin Boulevard and the extension of Vernon Street across from Central American Boulevard. We already did the first part in the main of the city but from Central American Boulevard to the Phillip Goldson Highway…all of that will be done. And then we’re also looking at periphery streets like Tigris Street and King Street and some other side streets.”

Mayor Bradley told News Five that he expects the work on the bigger streets to get underway within the next few weeks.
