Patrick Faber Speaks Out on Proposed Firearms Act Amendment

Patrick Faber

At the sitting of the House of Representatives on Friday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow spoke briefly on the introduction of a bill to amend the Firearms Act. According to the PM, one of the aspects of the Act which will be revisited is collective responsibility. Currently, if a gun or ammunition is found in a home, police generally arrest everyone within that home at the time. Likewise, if those items are found in a business-place, all persons on the premises can be arrested and locked down. But while that aspect of the act is under discussion for revision, Minister of Education Patrick Faber is just as adamant that it should remain as part of the act.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“A major issue that we’ve been contemplating is the issue of collective responsibility – when they find a weapon of some sort, if nobody takes responsibility who is going to be charged? You know, I might get in trouble for saying this but I believe the way it is might not be so bad at all, because it squeezes somebody to be responsible in the current system the way it is. It puts responsibility on everybody to be each other’s keeper and to watch to see who is doing what and to rat them out. But when you erase that…we’re not at the point where we know what it’s going to be – you’re aware that it has been sent to committee and representation will be made from other stakeholders. But the minute we say that you can only tag that on one person and if you can’t determine who it is then nobody will be blamed, then we are going to have problems in the society with the guns again. And while I respect the right of people to protest and complain about what they determine to be draconian laws, many of these laws are put in place for a purpose you know…and they are the same people who when the crime is out of control ask what the government is going to do. Remember preventative detention and how many time the Prime Minister tried to put it in…people didn’t want it.”
