Family Seeks Answers in San Ignacio Chopping…

A vicious chopping incident in San Ignacio Town over a month ago remains uninvestigated, despite numerous attempts by the family of Felix Romero Junior to have a formal inquiry conducted into the incident.  While the family contends that the bitter rivalry is the result of envy among former friends of Romero, they allege that the local police are purposely dragging their feet.  Romero was reportedly hacked multiple times to various parts of the lower body, his left leg partially severed during the attack.  Today, his common-law wife spoke with News Five off-camera and recounted the harrowing experience, as well as the police department’s lethargic response in dealing with the matter.

“The incident happened the third of August in front of our home. We were at home and my mother was coming back from church along with my kids and me and my common-law and the rest of the family was at home. And he came out of the house to open the gate so that she could reverse the vehicle inside. When he was opening the gate and she start reversing the vehicle, six young men just approached him and drag him on the ground and they started to chop him under his arm and on his two knees. I manage to pick up a stone and stone one of the young men and one of them shub me on the ground. My whole arm was bruised, my stomach and my knees and u-p to right now, we are trying to get help from the police, but there is no kind of help from the police. We tried in San Ignacio, they are not assisting us; we tried in Belmopan. Some give us the whereabouts as to where to go but they would not take the report same way. So we came here in Belize City but they need to get authorization from San Ignacio department to call them so that someone could go and take the statement. Right now it is very hard because we are not getting justice from them.”

“What’s behind this attack? What’s the motive behind why your common-law-husband was brutally chopped by these men?”

Voice of: Common-law Wife of Felix Romero Jr.

“Honestly, I still don’t know why they want to do that. Every time he has to go to work along with the Ministers or sometimes he gets job along with Mister Trapp, the mayor of San Ignacio. The first incident, it was a chopping incident that happened. He called me and said that he was going home for food, and he was going to buy corn tortilla from one of the neighbors first. I said okay. I was outside and me and my mother and a workman was throwing stones in the yard. Then I saw him bend the curve from the lane and the same young man he and his brother approached him, driving up to him fast in the vehicle, almost hitting him. If he didn’t throw a stone, they would have knocked him down dead. They reversed their vehicle, one of them jumped out, kicked him down and then the other one took out a machete and start chopping him with a machete. They had a bound over the peace and the night the incident happened, the third of August, I called the San Ignacio police station and told them what is taking place. They told me I need to take the paper way down to the station so that they can come and assist me.”

According to Romero’s common-law, the family is buckling under the weight of his medical expenses since a medico-legal form is yet to be handed over to them.
