The Merging of 3 Schools…An Update!

Sr. Caritas Lawrence

Also on the table for discussion today was the merging of the resources of three high schools – Maud Williams, Sadie Vernon and Excelsior. It was officially announced at the end of the 2013 school year. The decision raised all kinds of concerns, but it went through anyway. And today, just a few weeks into the new school year, the Ministry reports that all seems to be going well. Sister Caritas Lawrence, one of the Ministry’s frontline staff overseeing the merger, told us today that it isn’t actually a merger.

Sr. Caritas Lawrence, Ministry of Education

“It is not a merger. We have three distinct high schools but they have agreed to share what is common among them with each other. The program is going very well. We monitored it in the first week and second week of school. All our teachers were present. All our students who signed up were there…they are still signing up for high school so we are hoping that we will do an increase in attendance. It’s not finished yet. We will take children right up until the end of September, the beginning of October if they still want to come in. The children are going to ITVET, they are going to Sadie Vernon, they are going to Maud Williams and they are going to Excelsior. The campus with the best facility for what we want to teach…that is the one they are going to….or the campus that most of the students in the campus are taking the subjects. So they are going for business and for science as well for the vocational and technical subjects. The students are very happy going to each other’s schools, and it is quite impressive with three different uniforms on each campus and students at task doing the work.”

Parents had expressed a concern about their children going to school in different turfs, so to speak, because of the ongoing gang rivalries. According to Sister Caritas Lawrence, that has not been a problem at this point.
