Sporting Highlights with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

After falling in a 2-zip score to Honduras at the COPA Centro Americana, being hosted inside the United States, the national male team of Belize took on Guatemala at Dallas, Texas yesterday in a must win ballgame. The national side had the opportunity to open the scoreboard some 10 minutes in when this corner kick finds the head of Elroy Smith who nods it to Deon McCauley but the striker simply can’t turn his body for maximum effect. 24 minutes in, Guatemala works this 2 man game to perfection that concludes with this cruel left foot launch which forces goalkeeper Shane Orio into a spectacular finger tip save.

Two minutes later, #20 El Pescado Tijera displays superb control with his back to the goal and unleashes this acrobactic shot that Shane Orio could do little about as Guatemala takes the 1-zip lead at the 20th minute. Just before 1st half expires, Jorge Contreras attacks off the left side to unleash this low cruise missile that crashes into the near upright. Meanwhile, Belize comes out with much more resolve in after intermission and Evan Mariano’s center finds Kafu Roches who tries to direct it to Deon McCauley only to see the play foiled by a good defensive effort. However, against the run of play, this set piece allows Marvin Thomas to head the ball at goal. Shane Orio fumbles and in his haste to recover gets the ball past the goal line and its 2-nil just like that. The slo-mo picture leaves no doubt the call was a good one.

In the meantime, give Trevor Lennon some props for this mighty defensive effort that keeps the score at a two-goal deficit. On this play, Everal Trapp does tug his opponent’s shirt for a foul, but the Guatemalan player should have been booked for a flagrant elbow. Folks, sting by that mistake in early half, Shane Orio dug deep to demonstrate his quality with this defensive stop in a 1 on 1 situation. At the other end, Deon McCauley finally gets a good look at goal but is denied by the Guatemalan keeper. Again Shane Orio has to come up big when El Pescado Contreras fires this low cruise missile unattended only to be foiled by a heroic effort. At the 79th minute, Trevor lennon in traffic finds Deon McCauley and the left foot tangles into the net to give Belize its 1st goal of the tournament.

Belize is now pumped up and again Shane Orio is asked to play big and he does. Here’s another monster save and this one is unbelievable as Orio digs out this ball from pointblank range. Folks we’re in the final play of the ballgame when this set piece give Ian Gaynair the opportunity to become the hero, but he misses the header due to defensive interference as Belize looses 2 to 1 in its 2nd outing. Guatemala moves up to 6 points and Belize remains without a point and for all intents and purposes we’re out of it. Belize comes out for its final appearance in this tournament on Wednesday, September 10th at Houston Texas against El Salvador. A win would give us some reason to celebrate.

Now let’s check in on play in the F.F.B. Women Cup as Sugar City Girls and Gentle Touch clashed inside the Norman Broaster Stadium yesterday. It’s the home team  with the first good shot at goal when Vialene Lambert fires off the right wing but the keeper handles the launch. Gentle Touch continues to press and Eden Gentle should have opened the scorevoard on this move, the ball reaches Sherean Tracey who gives her team the 1-zip lead. Tracy could have doubled the lead but is denied by the keeper, Ruby Mai. This is a nice outside launch from Cynthia Salazar and the crossbar becomes Miss Mai’s best friend. Now here comes Sugar City Girls, Vanessa Mai, gets the feed from Naileny Manzanero and she ties the ball game. The OW team surges ahead when the Gentle Touch keeper fumbles this ball and Janellie Chan makes her pay.

6 minutes later, this outside shot from Janellie Chan gives her a 2nd goal of the match to make it a 3-1 score. Gentle Touch comes back as Nataki Alvarez gets this ball into the net for the 3-2 score. Nataki Alvarez then gets the chance for a 2nd goal but again Mai hangs tough. Sugar City Girls put this game to bed when Karen Garcia launches this set piece at goal; the rebound reaches Alyssa Gillett who scores for the 4-2 final score. Looking ahead, 2nd round action kicks off on 13th September with Sugar City facing Smart Millennium at Ladyville Football Field and on the 14th…it’s Dangriga Pumas visiting the Toledo Girls.

Finally folks, we turn to cycling and yesterday’s Weekend Warriors 6th annual Albert/Regent Street Criterium. James Frampton won the A Class ride 70 laps. Big Mike Lewis finished 2nd and Ronald Jack Sutherland 3rd.  Here is Kaya Cattouse of Smart edging Ray Cattouse of Stationery House/Medinas while Isaiah Willacy of Digicell 4G rounds out the top 3. It was Santino Castillo with the big win in the 10 laps C Class ride edging out Ingmar Perrera of Stationery House/Medina and Manuel Esquiliano of Truckers who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
