Proposed Head Tax for San Pedro Tourists

The San Pedro Water Taxi Platform is a recent construction spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism.  The terminal which was completed not long ago, will be used by stakeholders in the local transportation industry and is being operated by the Border Management Agency.  This morning around eleven o’clock, a meeting was held on the island and was attended by Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia, San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero, members of the water taxi community, as well as officials from the Belize Tourism Board and the Border Management Agency.  Among the issues discussed was a proposed surcharge for outside visitors disembarking on the island using the facility.  It is unclear at this point what the cost will be, when the tax system will be implemented and what the additional revenues will be used for.  News Five has learned that the added income will presumably be used for the maintenance of the facility.
