Adventist Youth Mission Returns from Guatemala

A delegation of youths recently returned from Guatemala where they attended a religious forum for members of the Seventh Day Adventists.  While in Guatemala, the group took the opportunity to engage in community outreach, sprucing up parks and playgrounds, as well as schools and other public spaces in Rio Dulce, Moralez and Puerto Barrios.  The experience, says youth director Gelder Gamboa, is one they have all learned from.

Pastor Gelder Gamboa, Youth Director, Belize Union of Seventh Day Adventists

“We do have the general conference of the Seventh Day Adventists and there are thirteen divisions around the world and our division which Belize belongs to is the Inter-American division and certainly it embraces all the Central American countries, the Caribbean and indeed we had over eight thousand youths in Guatemala embracing Guatemala.”

“Now what was the purpose of this?  I know you guys had a congress, as well as some other activities that were community-based that you guys did in that two-week period that you were there.”

“Certainly.  All the unions came together under the umbrella of the Inter-American division to send three hundred youths for week number one and that is to go and help in the poor neighborhoods and to build homes and also to paint parks and many other things were done and paint schools.  For example, Belize, we were able to embrace Guatemala by one group going to Rio Dulce and one group going to Moralez and one group going to Puerto Barrios.  This is where the Belize groups were doing the work there by reaching out to the community.”

“Now in regards to the congress, I understand it happened in the latter part of the two weeks that you guys were there.  I am sure that there were several issues that were discussed when it comes to youths and of course them making an impact on their society and some of those issues in general.  Could you tell us about some of those issues that came up in the congress?”

Pastor Gelder Gamboa

“Well certainly we believe that the youths are not the future of tomorrow, they are the future of today and certainly Belize, I know that many of our youths, if we don’t invest money or if we don’t invest in them who else will invest?  And it’s not only about the Seventh Day Adventists but we are talking throughout the country.”
