Accused Rapist Dennis Gabourel Charged with Attempting to Suppressing Evidence
Also in court today was Belize City businessman, fifty-seven year old Dennis Gabourel. The tour guide of Antelope Street Extension is facing a charge of Attempting to Suppress Evidence in respect of a rape charge against him. Gabourel is accused of offering his alleged victim five thousand dollars to drop the rape charge against him. The woman refused his offer and reported the matter to police. While the incident was reported since last week, it was not until today that Gabourel was picked up by police and charged. Gabourel, who was brought to court in cuffs, was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith. No plea was taken and he was offered bail in the sum of one thousand dollars plus one surety of the same amount. He is due back in court on October third. In 2005, Gabourel was convicted of raping the woman. He appealed the decision and a retrial was ordered. The alleged rape occurred on September nineteenth, 2003; the woman claimed Gabourel offering her a ride to home, but instead took her to the hanger area in Belize City and had sexual intercourse with her against her will.
