Belize City Duo Detained Following Pre-dawn Shooting Over Mangoes

Sgt. Roberto Novelo

On the August first, 2014 at about three-thirty a.m. Andrew Augustine was shot in the foot on Holy Emmanuel Street in the Lake Independence area of Belize City. The altercation had apparently started earlier that day when Augustine and two other men had a misunderstanding over a bag of mangoes. As trivial as it seems, those mangoes were the reason behind an escalation in the violence.  Police say that at least three shots were fired. One of those shots hit Augustine causing injury. According to Sergeant Novelo, Precinct Two, two men have been detained with investigations pending.

“Sir in relation to that shooting in which a young man was shot to one foot, we were told that the motive was a bag of mangoes. Can you elaborate?”

Sgt. Roberto Novelo, NCO, CIB, Precinct 2, Belize City Police

“That has not been confirmed. We have two persons detained. We got that information also but that has not been confirmed.”

“So can you tell us more about that incident and what initial investigations have revealed because we are told that there had been an altercation previously with two other young men?”

Sgt. Roberto Novelo

“Yes, we got an information that the complainant mentioned that he had a misunderstanding with certain persons over a bag of mangoes. Those persons have been detained, been interviewed and released. OUT 11:21

IN 12:06 Three shots were fired. We found three expended shells in the yard and we confirm that the father of the minor, a female and another brother was inside the house at the time.”
