Orange Walk Teen Executed While Buying Tacos

Roy Bayliss

The weekend’s other murder victim is an eighteen year old Corozal resident who was killed execution style early Sunday morning in Orange Walk Town. At around five forty-five Roy Bayliss sat down with a friend to eat tacos at a popular vendor at the Fort Cairns Market Plaza in Orange Walk Town. He didn’t get to finish his meal because a gunman walked up to him and shot him in the face. The brutal, brazen early morning murder has shaken the community and Police are carrying out an intensive investigation to get to the bottom of it. While nothing can bring Bayliss back, the Police are determined to find a motive and a murderer. Mike Rudon was in Orange Walk this morning and has the story.

Early Sunday morning, after a night of partying at a local nightspot, eighteen year old Roy Bayliss came here to have breakfast at a popular tacos vendor in the Fort Cairns Market Place. He was out celebrating with friends, and was to have met them here, but within minutes of ordering his tacos, a man walked up to him and shot him in the face.

“Upon the Police’s arrival, a male person was seen lying on the ground with what appeared to be gunshot injuries to the right side of the jaw. The person was then picked up and taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where he died shortly thereafter. His name was learned to be Roy Bayliss, eighteen years, Belizean Labourer of Third Street North Corozal Town. Initial Police investigations revealed that the deceased along with another friend was in the area of Fort Cairns Market. A male person came up to him who fired several shots at him and thereafter walked off, got on a bicycle and rode away.”

Police have detained fifteen persons during the course of the preliminary investigation. They are also exploring several leads in the search for a motive, including one report that Bayliss was shot as a direct result of an altercation inside Hi-Five nightclub earlier that morning.

“We have also received that same information and we are following up on that part of the information. As we speak officers are out there following up on that.”

Police believe that after the altercation, Bayliss was followed to Fort Cairns Plaza and gunned down. Today all that is visible is a blood stain under the table where he was shot, and a trail of blood on the cement floor of the Plaza, left behind when Police rushed him to the Northern Regional Hospital in an attempt to save his life.  Bayliss had just turned eighteen on Friday.
