Man Charged for Murder in Kimmie’s Bar Arson…

Francisco Rodriguez

In June, a twenty-three year old mother of three died in the flames which destroyed Kimmie’s Bar, located on Newtown Barracks in Belize City. Today, the man police believe is responsible for the fire which killed Jackie Arteaga was formally arraigned for her murder. Twenty-three year old Francisco Rodriguez, a Wilson Street resident and a cousin of Arteaga, was taken to court where one count of murder and four counts of arson were read to him. No plea was taken since the offences are indictable and the matter will be heard in the Supreme Court. Rodriguez was brought to court from the Belize Central Prison, where he is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for armed robbery. He pled guilty to that offence in Cayo Magistrate’s Court on Monday. It is during his incarceration that Rodriguez allegedly confessed to the Kimmie’s Bar fire, which led to the file being forwarded to the D.P.P.’s Office for advice. It is on that advice that he was charged. Rodriguez’s demise actually started on July twenty-second, when he was picked up in Belize City with Edwin Flores. Flores had attempted to blackmail an Orange Walk businessman, and was captured in a sting operation. Rodriguez, believed to be a member of the Salvadoran MS-Thirteen gang, is to return to court on September twenty-ninth, 2014.
