Greg Ch’oc Says There’s Still No Mediation between SATIIM and U.S. Capital Energy

On June sixteenth, Justice Michelle Arana ordered the government of Belize and SATIIM to engage in mediation where the exploration by US Capital Energy is concerned – mediation, but with no guidelines or determined outcome, which seems like somewhat of a hollow victory for SATIIM. Today, Executive Director Greg Ch’oc told us that the mediation hasn’t even started, and in the meantime there is no restriction on the activities of US Capital Energy.

Greg Ch’oc, Executive Director, SATIIM

“The court has ordered mediation. Our attorneys have been engaged back and forth with government’s attorneys. It seems that there hasn’t been any agreement on the terms of that mediation. I think that has been the delay, so we haven’t had much progress on that side. We are still consulting on the other cases that we may bring before the court as it relates to the extension of the permit. In terms of SATIIM, we just have to engage the community and have people understand why some decisions have to take so long and why it is important to get their feedback on those issues.”

“Is the company still going out to the communities and meeting with them?”

Greg Ch’oc

“Yeah absolutely, they have not stopped. The decision of the company to continue to frustrate and confuse the community I think is deliberate and unfortunately they have on their side the District Association of Village Councils that is trivializing what is fundamentally important for the people of Toledo to understand. You can’t go to a community and say do you want drilling or you don’t want drilling. It’s really a mockery of the intelligence of the people of the Toledo District, and that body aided and abetted by US Capital and government shows how low they will go to pursue their agenda.”
