Belizean Athletes Upbeat About Commonwealth Outing

Belizean cyclist, Gregory Lovell, and Flag Bearer, Katy Sealy, were selected from the delegation to dine with Queen Elizabeth the Second and the Duke of Edinburgh at the Commonwealth Games Athlete’s Village today.  According to Vasquez, the athletes are all enthusiastic about representing Belize at the sports meet.

“As you know, they call it the friendly games and I believe the reason for that is that, like many other competitions, no country or other discipline has to qualify to take part in the Commonwealth Games.  I think it’s a quota that’s given to each country as to how many people can participate and what the Belize Olympics Committee then does is take that quota and split it into the various disciplines that are prepared to come.  For us it’s a first-time experience and I am sure that Mr. Tun will get quite a bit of experience.  We have been practicing since we got here, I have been here all week and we have been getting our scheduled time to practice.  Likewise, for all the other disciplines, everybody goes off their own way every day, athletics goes to the stadium, the cyclists guys go riding but now that the competition has started there is not much practicing that can be done because, of course, the venues are being used.  So competition starts today and I think it goes on until August third. This is a very good group, it’s the first time I’ve traveled with this group and everybody is in good spirits and I think that they are quite happy to be here and happy to be getting the experience.  There are countries like us that aren’t quite the upper levels but there quite a bit of, there are seventy-one countries here and from the information I got from the opening ceremonies there were almost eight thousand athletes here.  The opening ceremony of course was quite magnificent, I think there were about seventy thousand people in the stadium.  I think you guys had a clip of us entering the stadium.  But the Belize delegation is quite good, we are together and we are having quite a bit of fun.”
