A state funeral for deceased Ambassador Fred Martinez

A state funeral was held on Saturday afternoon for Ambassador Fred Martinez who died on Wednesday morning in a Guatemala hospital. Martinez served in Guatemala for ten years and was also served as Ambassador to Mexico and non-resident ambassador to a host of other countries. Martinez was a principal figure in the territorial dispute between Belize and Guatemala. At his state funeral, the Prime Minister paid homage to the ambassador, who as recent as two weeks, was at a SICA summit in the Dominica Republic. Isani Cayetano reports.

The state funeral of former Ambassador Fred Martinez was held at La Inmaculada Church on Saturday in Orange Walk Town.  The arrival of his cremated remains, to much pomp and circumstance by BDF personnel, commenced the official proceeding.

Present at the funeral were Prime Minister Dean Barrow, Governor General Sir Colville Young, Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington and a host of other government officials.

The eulogy was delivered by Senator Lisa Shoman.

“The way that Alfredo would diffuse tension in a room where people were furious and worried—sometimes angry, upset and fearful—were legendary. The way Fred would say make we smoke them like armadillo. The time when Alfredo was awarded—and I won’t say by whom—to protect the innocent and the guilty alike, the time when he was awarded the honor of the bukut, because he had just been awarded with the Aztec Eagle from Mexico. Fred loved his family at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and they loved him back.”

Prime Minister Barrow also spoke on Ambassador Martinez’s career as a diplomat.

“And after the special agreement was signed and Belize was preparing for the referendum to decide on going to the ICJ, Fred’s interventions and public debates and on media appearances here at home were always extremely well received. He was informative, analytical and measured in making the case and so was greatly appreciated by his countrymen regardless of which side of the issue they were on.”

Ambassador Martinez was interred at the Piemont Cemetery with full military honors, including the twenty-one gun salute. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

Ambassador Martinez is survived by his wife, Emma, and three children.
