Remains of Ambassador Fred Martinez Arrive in Belize

The ashes of former Ambassador Alfredo ‘Fred’ Martinez were returned to Belize today, following a cremation in Guatemala City where he succumbed earlier this week. Ambassador Martinez, a preeminent figure within the diplomatic community, was instrumental in maintaining peace between Belize and Guatemala amid the longstanding territorial dispute between both countries.  On Thursday, in Guatemala City, a memorial service was held in Martinez’s honor, before his burnt remains were brought back to Belize for a state funeral.  That ceremony will be held in Orange Walk Town at the La Inmaculada Church on Saturday and will include much pomp and circumstance, as well as distinctive elements of military tradition, including the twenty-one gun salute.  Of equal note is the passing of former UDP minister and Corozal Mayor Israel Alpuche.  In September 2012, Alpuche was among twenty-five persons honored during the annual Tribute to Belizean Patriots.  He was conferred with the meritorious service award.  News Five understands that Alpuche’s family has politely declined an official funeral.

Why would this country not recall this man home if they knew he was having health problems. It is sad to hear the people who hole positions as Ministers talk, they sound so ignorant and stupid.

Our country is in very bad shape, nothing will change until those of us who are educated abroad get enough guts to go home and help. I am one of those I am talking about. I met two young men from Belize one is a Kidney specialist, the other is a cardiologist, they are well thought of doctors working in big hospitals, we are needed in our country but who wants to work for a government that could care less about us as a people who wants to make the difference.
