Corozal police need help to identify man who died at hospital

Andrew Ramirez

Corozal police are seeking public assistance in identifying the body of a middle-aged man who succumbed at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital on Tuesday morning from injuries he received almost one month ago.  The individual of Hispanic descent was found along the Xaibe Road on June ninth in an unconscious state and was subsequently transported to Belize City for medical attention.  Despite all attempts to conduct an interview with him after showing signs of revival, the investigating officers were discouraged by medical personnel.  During that time however, they learned that the man had been identified by two different names.  In the wake of his passing, they are appealing to residents of the community to come forward with a formal identification in order for a post mortem examination to be conducted on the body.

Supt. Andrew Ramirez, O.C., Corozal Police Formation

“On the ninth of June last month, Corozal police had visited an area on the Xaibe Road [in the] Corozal District where they had found a male individual unconscious.  At the time, the name given to Corozal police was one Leocardio Cobb of the said village of Xaibe.  That person was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, KHMH, in a critical condition.  Several efforts were made by Belize City police and likewise Corozal police to speak with the individuals; however, speaking with him was not recommended by the medical authorities because of the serious injuries.  Apparently, he had sustained injuries to the head area.  He could communicate with us so there is no communication, there is no information as to what may have led to his injuries.  I know that some persons are indicating that it was a road traffic accident and we are asking the community if they have any witnesses pertaining to that information or what may have caused the injuries to that individual to please come forward to the Corozal police and give us that information so that we continue investigation.  The investigation remains open, we do not know if it was an intentional blow or a road traffic accident, famously known as RTA.  Again, the individual is also known as Eusebio Basto.  Once again we ask the community of that vicinity, if they know the real name of that individual, to please come forward because again, as part of standard operating procedures, in order for a post mortem to be conducted the doctor requests that the identity be confirmed.”
