US Ambassador Carlos Moreno on Human Trafficking report

Carlos Moreno

US Ambassador Carlos Moreno has hit the ground running. The US head of mission arrived on Saturday and on Tuesday; he was greeted with an anti-homosexual protest as he presented credentials in Belmopan. Another issue that surfaced early this week was the downgrade of Belize by the State Department for human trafficking.  The State Department report points out Belize has not done enough to tackle this pressing issue. In fact, the report says “the failure to convict and punish trafficking offenders, especially allegedly complicit government officials remained a significant problem.” This afternoon, Moreno spoke diplomatically about the damning report.

Carlos Moreno, US Ambassador to Belize

“It’s a bit off topic, but it is something that I am familiar with. But these assessments are mainly that. By no means are they an indictment and I think it means that we just have to work together cooperatively to address the major issues that are raised in those kinds of assessments. In terms of the relationship between the two governments, I think it demonstrates a sense of openness and a desire to engage in constructive dialogue to work on a solution. The tip problem is not just a problem in Belize; it is a worldwide problem and the United States is also implicated. So I think that these reports are good for us to look at, to analyze and come about with constructive solutions.”

You cannot deal with a gov. When they are totally corrupt mr Moreno you have walked into a country where the pm and his gov. Are totally corrupt and they are nothing but thieves and murderers as you well know mr Moreno their has been over 4000 murders since this gov. Has been in office and they are responsible for for all these deaths because of their incompetence and impotence And the corrupt police dept has committed some of these murders themselves I do not envy you mr Moreno but for gods sake do not I repeat do not give this gov. One penny or it will end up in their pockets and the people it’s intended for will not see one coppa .

The problem is a lack of accountability by the PM. He knows who his corrupt cabinet people are, but he is scared shitless to do anything because they know his dirt also. Until these people die and new honest blood is allowed to run country we are in trouble.

It is hard to know when there could be an honest bunch to run the country, everyone is learning from this present government how to fleece a country and not pay a criminal price by going to jail.
    So sad.
