P.U.P. Convention in Orange Walk north, DPM says he is not worried

Gaspar Vega

There were all manner of state matter to ask Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega about today, and we did. But we also asked him to don his party hat for a moment. Vega is the area representative in Orange Walk north, an area considered somewhat of a U.D.P. stronghold in the mostly P.U.P. controlled north of the country. The P.U.P. held a convention this past weekend and more than eighteen hundred persons cast their vote. It’s considered a good showing for the P.U.P. in the area, but Vega told us that he isn’t losing sleep over it just yet.

Gaspar Vega, Orange Walk North Area Representative

“I don’t get involved with the P.U.P. politics. Truthfully I didn’t wish either one good or bad. That is not my business. I don’t think it was a low turnout. It was a fair turnout. But you have to realize that Orange Walk North is a very active constituency. In other words we have one of the highest turnouts in any election. In the last election two years ago we had eighty two percent turn-out… Briceño at that time two years ago got two thousand three hundred votes. I got three thousand four hundred plus. So that tell you that…I’m not saying it’s a poor turnout, but it’s not a turnout that’s going to make me lose weight.”

Vega will be challenged in the next general election by Ramon Cervantes Jr., the victor at the convention!
