Oil companies all over the world normally promise communities a paradise before drilling. However these communities usually end up living in hell after the wealth is taken out. Come on Belize we have been taken for a ride by promises of the politicians for far too long. Now we are taking the same forbidden apple of the oil companies who rule the politicians.

The minister talking:
"Boo Hoo I am so sad.
Now go order me a New Landcruiser and make sure the windows are dark tinted so I can hide.
And make sure no Maya ruins on Ambergris Caye are destroyed.
We also have to see what we can do to destroy Placencia's tourism. "

@storm...I agree with you 100%. This Island has seen an influx of hard working Belizeans and people from around the world..and it was honest hard work that got San Pedro to where it is. But with the good also come the bad...and yes too many thugs have come in...but when you try to do something to stop this...there is public outrage...things like having a manifest on the boats for the police and authorities to know who comes in and out...and so many other good ideas to take the crime element out...but then they put in the human rights issue...the issue that a Belizean has a right to be where they want...so politician bend down to the public outrage and the thugs stay on the island...sad....so sad....

I beg to differ with the closing statement, "there is not much that anyone can do...". Of course there is!!! The majority of this yearly health and environmental hazard is caused by the careless and lazy style of tilling the land by the aliens living in this country. These trespassers have usurped every aspect of our daily lives and we just keep taking it. If it weren't for these persons living in our midst, life would be no much nicer and healthier in Belmopan and the Cayo district. But why is this and these people tolerated, why, for votes of course!!

Truth is, Grijalva had his equipment there for one day and got busted! And rightfully so! Cameras showed up with his hand in the cookie jar! Doesn't matter how many cookies he says were there when he took his two! He's guilty! On camera! But that place has not been considered a Mayan ruin by the people back there, it's been considered a QUARRY!! All the sugar cane roads back in that area got their material from there. And guess who's equipment was digging it? Min. of Works!! It got exposed, and now everyone is "appalled" and "shocked" but truth is, it's been a quarry for the last 10-15 years!! Grijalva got busted. People have known about this, but no one cares. Maya ruin? How does that help us? Sugar cane farm roads? Bring it on!!! That's the truth!!

If we had a Minister of Health, he could investigate and save the situation here. It's wrong to force children to become sick in order to get an education. The community should be protesting to the elected leaders.

Why hasn't the MOU been published for all of us to read? Why hasn't Norwegian's proposal been published? Is the information only for the aristocrats? Are we average Belizeans to be shut out of how our nation and its environment are going to be changed by the mega-development?

I posed this question before, but nobody answered it. I think it must be answered.

HOW WILL CRUISE PASSENGERS GET FROM CRAWL CAYE TO THE MAINLAND? It can only be accomplished one of two ways:

1. By using tender boats and water taxis, which is the same system that the cruise lines object to in Belize.

2. By building a causeway, in effect, totally changing the coastline, destroying some natural beaches and making new artificial beaches -- that's pretty enormous change to the environment!

Is the mega-develiopment good for the nation over the long-term, or just good for the bank accounts of politicians over the short-term? Which goal should we Belizeans bow down to?

It's a big project, it needs a big national discussion. I really don't trust the competence or honesty of the PM to make these decisions by himself in secret -- do you?

Congratulations to all of the winners, who have worked hard to open up new areas for tourism. Their communities are lucky to have them.

As for Ambergris Cay, the awards might reflect what we all see in the news and comments here, San Pedro is going down the drain, too many thugs, too many drugs. Sad to see that. The King is dead, long live the King!

San Pedranos should think long and hard about how far they want to let their island descend before they start to work and fight to reclaim it and restore it. Is it time to throw out the "elected leaders" there under whose leadership the island is going to hell?

Even if PM/lawyer Barrow advises the company to ignore the court order, the people of these villages are not powerless.

1. They can organize so that nobody in the villages will work for or help Treaty Energy.

2. They can learn about their Constitutional power to arrest lawbreakers, and decide if they should arrest people who are drilling for oil with no valid contract, as the court has determined.

3. They can carry out peaceful demonstrations to interfere with and stop the illegal operations of Treaty Energy.

When GOB refuses to follow or enforce the law, we all still have our collective rights -- after all, GOB was elected by us to do what we want, not what Barrow, or Vega or any other crooked politician wants for himself. That practice has to change, and now is a good time to start changing it.

Do we have another baby slaughterhouse now, under the reign of Marin and Dr. Allen?

I wonder how many babies survived the hospital in May -- I'd guess the number of survivors is less than the number of dead.

It seems mothers would be better off to have their babies at home, or in a taxi -- anywhere but in KHMH.

I REALLY BELIEVE WE NEED TO BRING IN A FIRST-WORLD, AMERICAN OR BRIT, DOCTOR TO OVERSEE HOW OUR HOSPITALS ARE BEING RUN, CLEANED, ETC. Between KHMH and the Northern Regional Hospital, we have too many deadly mistakes, and it seems that babies are paying for those mistakes with their lives.

ARE THESE PROBLEMS ACCEPTABLE TO YOU?

The PM seems to have lost his voice over the Denny Grijalva scandal, but he needs to be heard on these poor dead babies.

I wonder how many babies survived the hospital in May — I’d guess the number of survivors is less than the number of dead.

It seems mothers would be better off to have their babies at home, or in a taxi — anywhere but in KHMH.
