Certified students at ITVET receive National Vocational Qualification

Margarita Gomez

According to Gomez, this is just one prong of an extensive initiative to promote technical and vocational education. There is constant interaction between the Ministry of Education and stakeholders, but she recognizes the need to do much more to reach their goals. Currently, students who are certified in Belize receive a National Vocational Qualification, but the region is moving towards one standard – the Caribbean Vocational Qualification. For Belize to do that, promotional campaigns like this are essential. But, like with everything else, there are challenges.

Dr. Margarita Gomez, Director for Employment Training & Education Services

“The biggest challenge could probably be the stigma. Besides you know the resources to get other things happening…but I think the stigma to a large extent. Because as you know the challenge we are facing here is the under-enrolment of these beautiful facilities that we call the ITVETS. And that is because as you know many persons are not viewing it as a viable option of coming into. They are saying…you know I am graduating from high school…instead of me coming to an ITVET which they would see as moving backwards…they would like to move on to a university, a sixth form or so forth. But part of what we are going to do as part of the European Union project is developing a communications strategy and that’s precisely to be able to improve the whole image of TVET…to have it focused on work force development. In fact this is a challenge as well in the region and at the regional level there has been effort in the development of a regional TVET strategy that speaks to a large extent to how we can improve the value of TVET, the knowledge of TVET, the importance of TVET and so we are not working in isolation. Our communications strategy will be built within that framework. Many of the things that we do…in fact what we are doing here today is part and parcel of promoting the importance and the value of TVET.”
