Ministry of Local Government to address financial issues in PG Town Council

Dean Barrow

In recent weeks, there have been persistent reports of financial problems at the Punta Gorda Town Council. Now financial difficulties in municipal administrations are legion – revenues are notoriously scarce while obligations are many. But there is word that the problems way down south in Punta Gorda are bigger than that – so serious in fact that the Ministry of Local Government has been called in. There are reports that the council is unable to meet even its basic expenses. Today, the Prime Minister confirmed the report.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“We have not had a hand in any examination of the situation but I know that the Ministry of Local Government has looked at it and I gather that they were in the process of making some recommendations as to the appointment of possible financial custodians but I’m not sure where it is.”

“So it’s not unforeseeable that the Ministry may have to intervene and somehow take over the day to day cash flow affairs of the Council? Has that been contemplated?”

Dean Barrow

“That’s the impression I have but really I’m not entirely certain. Minister Hulse would be able to say right off where things are.”

Minister of Local Government Godwin Hulse today confirmed that they are working with the Punta Gorda Town Council to see how they can help with the cash flow problems. He maintained that appointing an administrator would be a final step, and they haven’t gotten to that point yet.
