PM Barrow gives update on appeal in case of Penner

Dean Barrow

Seven months and counting – that’s how much time has passed since former Minister of State Elvin Penner was fingered in a serious immigration fraud. The public has remained committed to ensuring that Penner is brought to justice for his role in facilitating Belizean citizenship for Won Hong Kim. The political directorate has been every bit as committed to protecting him by any means necessary. In March, the Supreme Court was petitioned, and, in a landmark move issued a Writ of Mandamus directing Commissioner of Police Whylie to commence a criminal investigation of Elvin Penner. And then the government appealed the writ. Today, PM Barrow told us the appeal isn’t about Penner…it’s about clarification and setting precedents.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I think that’s based on the Solicitor-General’s view that it was a decision which went too far, and clarification from a higher court is necessary in terms of the future, in terms of the matter of what is precedent setting.”

“What’s the relationship now between the party and Elvin Penner?”

Dean Barrow

“Well you know that April thirtieth is the closing date for applications for those who want to contest to become the U.D.P.’s new candidate in the Cayo Northeast constituency. You can’t have greater evidence of the fact that we are moving on…we have moved on.”

  1. Ricky Malthus says:

So if no legal action is taken against Penner or if our foreign , tainted court system puts aside the Writ of Mandamus, a new precedent will have been set so that future corruption like this kind can continue, and lawyers can quote case law as proof. What stupid nonsense. This is the logic that is taught in London to get masters degree in law. It is no wonder that the laughs at us and steals our patrimony for dis da Belize.

” it was a decision which went too far”….hmmmm Yes, How dare the court tell the comish to do his work. How dare the court make a decision that makes people do what they were supposed to do from the beginning!

  3. Guerra says:

If we close shop on Penner, we are not living up to expectation. The man did an awful deed, the government is covering up, that even Commissioner is disrespecting the courts. We the people will not be moved, because to do so is to open the flood gates so others can do same.

the precedent being, let us be clear on this:
the most corrupt gov’t in Belize’s short history of self governance.

Possible the last gov’t before the whole $hithouse comes down and Guats and Mexicans divvy the country up.

    Liars and thieves!

Every time a politician opens their mouth here, you know it is BS,

They cover each other at every corner and junction and refuse to sell their fellow criminals out because they are all equally guilty and all feeding at the communal trough.

If they had any morals or scruples (which they don’t) , they should act accordingly.

How can you gain respect when you are the cause of the the country’s cancer.

Check out how other leaders accept responsibility and accept their failures. If our leader followed the same guidelines, he would probably have been in power for about three months.

What a disjointed, f.. up country we are.
