San Pedro Tiger Sharks versus Cayo Western Ballaz in NEBL Tournament

The National Elite Basketball League is heading into its eleventh week of regular season play and this weekend the number one seed San Pedro Tiger Sharks is set to take on the Cayo Western Ballaz.  While the Western Ballaz will have home court advantage on Saturday, they share a similar record of nine wins and one loss with the Tiger Sharks.  It makes for an interesting matchup, as both teams battle for basketball supremacy.  News Five sat with Darwin “Puppy” Leslie and Densemore “Wobble” Edwards, who both share personal tidbits about themselves and what can be expected from Saturday’s big game.

Darwin “Puppy” Leslie, Forward, San Pedro Tiger Sharks

“Puppy” went all the way back to Queen Square Anglican Primary School, you know, and they used to have these skits that we used to go to at the Bliss, well dehn time I noh think ih mih name Bliss, you know, but we used to go there fi di school play and unfortunately I was dressed as a puppy, my costume was a puppy and one more TV personality that was in that skit with me was Orson Picart.  So Orson Picart knows the name behind Darwin Leslie, “Puppy”.  From then Orson made sure the name stuck with me and when I started playing basketball everyone knew me as “Puppy” but didn’t know what “Puppy” was all about.  I’m also an actor.”

Densemore “Wobble” Edwards

“My uncle “Macka” Lamb he was one of the first to win the semipro basketball [championship].  He used to play for the [Penta] Lakers and he was also MVP in ‘87.”

Isani Cayetano

“That’s a year before you were born.”

Densemore Edwards

“That was one year before I was born.  Well, I read up on the history right so I wasn’t around at that time.”

Isani Cayetano

“Did you at any point in time, either growing up or when you became established as an up and coming talent, had any conversation with him about basketball and his contribution to basketball in Belize at the national level?”

Densemore Edwards

“Well, as a young boy coming up he use to take us around teaching us the game, learning from his experience, you know.”

Isani Cayetano

“I understand that you are an integral part of the Belize Bank Bulldogs [Basketball] Camp for youths, in terms of helping young talents to develop and become part of the sports scene in Belize.  Talk to us a bit about that.”

Darwin Leslie

Darwin “Puppy” Leslie

“Yes.  Countrywide a lot of kids know [me] because I am one of the coaches for the Belize Bank Basketball developmental program, you know.  That is hosted every Saturday at the Belize Bird’s Isle, you know, and a lot of kids tend to like my personality and like the way how I play, you know, I’m a skillful player, you know, a finesse player.  And that’s how a lot of kids got to know me also, you know, because we do a lot of countrywide tours with the programs so a lot more kids get to see me personally.”

Isani Cayetano

“The team that you belong to has a very strong record of nine and one, if I’m not mistaken.  The team that you’re going up against as well has a similar record of nine wins and one loss.  What can we expect from you as one of the star players on the Tiger Sharks in this weekend’s game?  What can we expect from you in terms of going up against a formidable opponent such as the Cayo Western Ballaz?”

Darwin Leslie

“It’s a big game and I think that the team expects a lot from me, you know.  We have our team captain, you know, Joker.  I can’t bring his first name but we have our team captain Joker.  I know also that the team looks to me as a leader and as a scorer and defensive player, you know, and also as an intimidator, you know, so I know that I have to bring my ‘A’ game Saturday night.”

Densemore Edwards

“This game Saturday is very important to us and we got to go out there, do our best and win this game.”

Isani Cayetano

“This is game eleven.  What do you believe you need to improve on personally in order to bring the best out of you to the game against the Western Ballaz?”

Densemore Edwards

“My role Saturday night is to go out there and try to get everyone involved, try to break down the defense and try to get my guys involved, put up some easy baskets and get this team into foul trouble because these guys are really big as well.”

The game, which will be held at Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio, will be aired live right here on Channel Five started at nine p.m.
