GST officers shakedown business owners in an extortion scam

Tonight, there is credible information surfacing which indicates an emerging scandal in another government department. News Five has been able to confirm that there are multiple allegations of corruption being levelled at politically connected officials within the General Sales Tax Department. We are told that two officers in particular are being accused of attempting to shake down money from businesses which owe GST to government. News Five has also confirmed from unofficial sources that the GST Department and even officials from the Ministry of Finance have been made privy to the allegations of corruption, but have done nothing to address the situation because the individuals named have close ties to senior political officials. We tried to contact GST Commissioner Betty-Ann Jones for comment today, but were told that she was in meeting. We did manage to speak to Deputy Commissioner Evan Brown. He told us that they have heard the allegations, but have not been presented with concrete evidence. He informed us that for a more comprehensive comment we would need to speak to Jones.  As we mentioned, the allegations are serious and multiple, and we understand that there is recorded evidence to support the claims of high-level hustling. We’ll continue to connect the dots and update you as we get more information.

As I’ve been saying all along, it is not only the Politicians that are crooked anymore, so are the regular folk. Come to think of it, that’s the same pool from which the Leaders come. Is it not?

I personally know a business that has been extensively ripped off by the GST peoples. They withhold the tax money which is to be returned. Intentional screw up is what I call that. Imagine the money these suckers make off of hard working Belizeans. Just think, if its $50,000.00 they owe one business, what about all the others?

See, if a family business trying to make a living, the GST people scream up at you because your mom and pap business should keep accounting. They throw the book and frighten small family run business’,- what kind of encouragement is that?

Then they come audit, with all judgement that you are stealing. For the little we can ever steal, they got bigger fish stealing within GOB and they swimming freely.

Our government should do an amnesty to have small-medium businesses come in and request to be registered without penalties.

Then as a business owner there is no training or ongoing seminars to guide you as to what taxes should be paid. When you go ask at income tax, they even yell at you (while holding their hands at their hips) , “what question you want to ask the commissioner” like, really Miss? Do I have to ask you my private (in fear) questions while there are 5 other people out here?

Our officers need training. Our entrepreneurs need training. Our government needs to encourage people to pay taxes, not by slamming the book in there face but to say, ok you have not been doing XYZ, now, you will need to and we’ll come audit every X months. And if you are not complying then XYZ will be steps taken. But train our entrepreneurs.
