Investments soon to be made in Harmonyville

Nigel Petillo

The Belize Grassroots Youth Empowerment Association (BGYEA) is in its fourth year of existence and has been fighting for months to get titles and even leases to parcels of land in a community they call Harmonyville. It continues to be a frustrating process for the one thousand plus individuals who were given an acre of land within the designated space located on the George Price Highway. We’ll have that later, but first, President of BGYEA, Nigel Petillo, is announcing that substantive investments will soon be made in the community. According to Petillo, development has been slow due to the lack of roads for members to access their lands. But that is soon to change because there are several investors the grassroots organization is in dialogue with, including Discovery Seismic Testing.

Nigel Petillo, President, BGYEA

“We noh have no money, we strapped for cash. Harmonyville consist of the poorest of people in this country. Most of our members are very poor and they needed that piece of land. An individual came to us, an investor who wanted to do some farming in Harmonyville…he wanted to plant out and then we make wah lee partnership. But Harmonyville, all of our land, surveyed up and we neva want mess with the pegs. So we realized that we have all this buffer land sitting down. We have about seventy acres of land that is considered buffer and we have three twenty acre parcels that we are waiting to partner with any church, school, businessman; any industry in terms of setting up institutions in those twenty acre parcels. That ends up to be one hundred and thirty acres of land or thereabouts. The intention here is that he is going to farm out the land and sell the crop….whatever he makes off that, the community gets fifteen percent. So we believe we can get in a two crop or three crop per year then dah two or three times the amount. All those monies will be geared up towards equipments and the development of our community.  So that’s one. We also have Discovery Seismic Testing…this is a company who works along with different oil companies. What they do is that they go in and do testing…they work the land and see if they can find oil in the area. We do believe that oil in the area so we welcome this idea here; however, we are hoping that they do it in a sustainable manner and all the parties involved could feel comfortable as we move forward as far as oil in that area. We have been able to negotiate with this company so far and it is still in its initial stages about putting in some roads for us….while I mean at the end of the day, the oil dah mainly about you. How I see oil ina this country, dah many the company get things. The country gets a lee bit and then you who got the land, you might get something. However, we need development, we are so desperate for roads—roads mean my people can access their land; accessing your land means development for Harmonyville. So we’ve been able to discuss four miles of road being pushed in by this company.”
