Shakeem Humes acquitted of attempted murder

Shakeem Humes

Meanwhile a Belize City youth was spared jail time when his attempted murder case was thrown out of court. Forty-eight year old Marco Obdulio Valle was shot once in the head on New Year’s Day 2013, as he was purchasing food at Battlefield Park.  His recovery has since been a long and arduous process.  Valle’s accused attacker, twenty-one-year-old Shakeem Humes, a known affiliate of the George Street Gang, was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder and dangerous harm.  But today, Humes walked out of court a free man when his case was struck out by Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith.  This morning, Humes appeared unrepresented for a preliminary inquiry in the matter when the prosecutor informed the court that the case file was unavailable.  While an initial request was made to have it sent over from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the file was never presented.  With that, both charges against Humes were withdrawn.  It is believed that Valle was randomly targeted by a lone gunman who rode past him, aimed the firearm in his direction and fired a single shot which caught him in the head.  Humes was on remand at the Belize Central Prison until August 2013 when he was granted and met bail in the sum of seven thousand dollars.  Incidentally, his brother Akeem Humes, who is also on pretrial detention, is accused of the shooting death of Orlando Williams which occurred moments earlier.
