2 men drown over the weekend

Reymundo Reyes

Thousands of Belizeans traditionally head to the beaches over the Easter holidays. But unfortunately, two persons lost their lives due to drowning. On Friday, just after noon, Santa Familia resident, Arsenio Landero, drowned when his small canoe capsized as he and his common-law wife made their way across the river from Esperanza village. Landero was pulled under, but his wife managed to swim across the river to seek help. His body was located thirty minutes later. The Cayo police explain.

Insp. Reymundo Reyes, Deputy O.C., San Ignacio Police Formation

“Sometime after twelve o’clock San Ignacio police was called to the Santa Familia where they visited an area near the Belize River between Santa Familia and Lily White village where the motionless body of a Hispanic male person was seen there on the bank. Information is that Mister Arsenio Landero, thirty-seven years old of the said village, was in Esperanza village with his common-law wife and after consuming some beverages they decided to cross over the river in their canoe. But whilst doing so, half way the canoe capsized causing him to go underneath the water and did not resurface. The wife managed to swim across to the Santa Familia area where she went for family members and requested for assistance and that is how half an hour after the boat capsized, the body of Mister Arsenio was located and police was informed about the situation.”

“Negligence? That’s what caused the fatality?”

Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“It appears that during the journey the gentleman because of his condition, he leaned to one side of the canoe causing it to capsize so you would say it was somewhat contributed by him.”

About three hours later on Good Friday, there was another drowning, this time in Red Bank in the south. Independence Police found on the bank of the Swasey River the lifeless body of thirty-four year old Santos Delcid Amaya, a Honduran laborer of Bella Vista Village. There were no signs of injuries on his body. Investigation revealed that Delcid Amaya perished when he went swimming earlier that day.
