Just around one on Monday, the Baton of Queen Elizabeth, the Second, arrived in Belize after making stops in other Commonwealth countries. The event occurs every four years and is in commemoration of the twentieth Commonwealth Games which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland later this year. In its first day in country, the royal baton took its tour of Belize City. Accompanied by four ambassadors, the baton was taken from the Philip Goldson International Airport by cyclists to the Memorial Park in Belize City. There it was handed over to Mayor Darrell Bradley in the presence of over a hundred youths, athletes and officials who gathered for a relay and a photo-op. To mark its third visit to the country since the traditional royal event started, three mahogany trees were planted at the Memorial Park. The tree planting occasion was followed by a relay, which included the Mayor Bradley, Minister Herman Longsworth and Rowan Garel.
