Prosecutor holds off on arraignment of George McKenzie Junior

George McKenzie Jr.

Nineteen year old George McKenzie Junior was escorted to the court this morning in handcuffs in connection with the murder of fifty-seven year old Alfonso Cruz. But about an hour after his arrival, the head of Prosecution Branch explained to Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser that they were seeking to hold off McKenzie’s arraignment. It is not clear why, but sources tell News Five that the delay was prompted because police may have the wrong man and shooter in Cruz’s murder. Still, McKenzie Junior was served with his charge sheet for the April twelfth murder of Cruz on Rhaburn’s Alley.  At the time of the murder, Cruz was hanging out in his yard when a lone gun man rode up on a bicycle and opened fire, hitting him once. He ran for cover inside his home, but collapsed shortly after and was rushed to the K.H.M.H., but was pronounced dead on arrival. According to reports, Cruz, who is well known in the neighbourhood, operated heavy duty machinery.  McKenzie is a recent graduate of the Maud Williams High School and if his name sounds familiar it is because he is the son of the deceased and notorious street figure, George “Junie Balls” McKenzie.
