Separate traffic accidents leave child dead, man critical

A traffic accident in Dangriga has left a family mourning the loss of a young child. Police report that around eight on Friday morning, seven year old Dayron Hernandez was riding his bicycle on St. Vincent Street when he was knocked down by a bus driven by thirty year old Lancia David. Hernandez was rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital but died while receiving treatment. The bus driver has told authorities that the child swerved suddenly in front of him and there was no way to avoid a collision. David has since been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving without due care and attention.

Meanwhile another cyclist, this time from the Cayo district, remains in a critical but stable condition at the San Ignacio Hospital after he was knocked down by a truck driver. Police tell News Five that around noon on Sunday thirty-six year old Edgar Alfonso was riding his bicycle between miles seventy-two and seventy-three on the Western Highway when he collided head-on into a truck driven by fifty-three year old Enrique Coleman. Coleman told cops at the scene that Alfonso had turned suddenly into his lane and the crash was unavoidable. Up to news time, no charges had been filed against Coleman.
