An update on weekend sporting activities

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. We take you out immediately to scenic San Pedro for Saturday night’s big time shootout between San Pedro Tigersharks and Belize City Smart No Limit as the NEBL rolled into week 10 of 14 week regular season. Tonight, No Limit comes out to a smoking start; Greg Rudon dishes to Brandon Rogers who moves Michael Adams out of the way to open the scoreboard. Of course in front of the home crowd the Tigersharks are not about to be upstaged so the response was immediate when Tyrone Edwards deals to Darwin Leslie who goes glass for 2. Ashton Edwards then gets hot and sinks the triple to give the home team a 4point lead. Ashton would put up a double digit 16 points tonight. Brandon Rogers remains hot for No Limit and here he slips under the outstretched arms of Winston Pratt to score 2 of his 15 game points.

At the end of the 1st, the home team leads the visitors 24 to 18. When the action resumes, Greg Rudon picks up this missed shot from Kevin Domingo and makes the put back count. In the meantime, when Winston Pratt captures this loose ball, nobody on No Limit could stop his forward motion; not even this grab by Kevin Lorenzo as he hits the bucket and would score three the hard way. Pratt who is second in scoring would finish with 20 points. Folks just before the half expires, watch this crash between Pratt and Rudon—Pratt would smash his forehead into the floor but would continue with a bandage over the right eye. At the half, the Islanders boast a 40 to 33 lead over the city dwellers. So we go to the 3rd quarter. Brandon Rogers deals to Rudon and the No Limit Captain sinks the triple and he would lead all scorers with the game high of 29 points. And here he is on the very next press to land consecutive threes.

In the meantime, this 3pt bucket from Kevin Lorenzo cuts the No Limit deficit to 1. At the end of the 3, it’s No Limit with a 1pt lead. Winston Pratt became a man possessed in the 4th and put the Tigersharks on his back as he ploughs through No Limit for 2. He then gets this throw in from Darwin Leslie to slam home 2 more. However, it’s this incredible shot by Greg Rudon that gives No Limit a 4 point lead with some 4 minutes into the 4th quarter. But here comes Darwin Leslie who picks up this loose ball and goes glass for 2 of his team high 28 pts. In crunch time, Leslie comes up with 2 free throws that extends the San Pedro lead to 4. No Limit then presses all out for points, but back to back blocks from 6 feet 11 inches Michael Adams swatted away their dreams of the W as San Pedro Tigersharks wins 84 to 81.

We will say this folks, it was the best game of the season and while we never criticize the referees, we must admit they didn’t do a very good job Saturday night.

In other action around the NEBL; in week 10, Belmopan Bandits ran over OW’s Running Rebels 95 to 77. Dangriga Warriors torched the Toledo Diplomats in an 81 to 53 final score and Cayo Western Ballaz crushed Corozal 80 to 65. The NEBL will pause for the Easter Holidays and resume on the 26th April with 4 big ballgames.

Turning to the cricket scene, play in the Harrison Parks National Cricket Competition saw the back to back national champ, Excellence of Double Head wallop Easy Does It of Lemonal 201 runs to 123 on an MVP performance from Kenroy Roca, who scored 74 runs and also struck for 3 wickets. Excellence now leads zone 1 with a 6 and 1 record while Easy Does It falls to 5 and 2.

On the Billiard scene, Element of Belize City beat Toledo United of Punta Gorda to repeat as champion in the 2nd annual Ben Bounahra Tournament staged at Mike’s Cue Lounge over the weekend. Larry Lisbey who remained undefeated for the duration of the tournament emerged with MVP honors and we say congratulations.

In football news, the PLB Belikin Cup Closing Season found a struggling FC Belize hosting undefeated Police United at the MCC Grounds yesterday. It’s the Police on the attack early when Danny Jimenez finds Clifton West who should have done better with this good look at goal. At the other end, Jarret Davis demonstrates just how lethal his left foot is when he fires this screamer at Keith Allen who needs 2 attempts to keep the ball out of his goal. Devaughan Zuniga then gets out of traffic to fire this grounder that crashes into the side netting as FC continues to probe. That persistence pays off at the 35th minute when Jarret Davis floats this set piece to the left side; it’s kept alive to Michael Whittaker whose on the run left foot swing finds the back of the net to give FC the 1-zip lead. The Police tries to respond off this corner kick, but goalkeeper Rawley remains sharp today. We’re into 2nd half when Andres Makin powers this right foot at goal, but Rawley is there to save FC Belize. the Police continue to hunt when Amin August Junior fires this grounder at goal only to see the ball rush past the wrong side of the far upright. Now let’s take a walk on the seamy side as Glen Martinez takes a bite out of this FC defender with studs blazing. Rightfully, he is run off the field by the referee with a red card. When Byron Usher picks up this loose ball he fires a bullet at goal but it right at Rawley who fails to contain the ball which reaches Clifton West whose right foot swings inches outside the target. The numerical balance is restored when Jarret Davis is chased by a 2nd yellow card for an offense off the ball, but FC Belize nevertheless goes on to post the 1-zip big W to hand Police United its 1st loss of the season. In other results, Belmopan bandits beat Paradise Freedom Fighters 1-zip Friday night and on Saturday, the B.D.F. and Verdes rallied to a scoreless stalemate.

We also want to congratulate the Belmopan bandits for its 4-2 win in Sunday’s International friendly against the Houston Hurricanes of the United States. We say good show. Looking to week 10 in the Belikin Cup, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., Police United will look to rebound against the Belmopan Bandits at the Beaton; at 8:30 p.m. at the MCC, FC Belize plays host to the B.D.F. and at the Marshalleck, Verdes FC gets a visit from San Ignacio. On Saturday, 3 matches begin at 7:30 p.m.  Belmopan Bandits will host FC Belize, Police United travels to Verdes and Paradise Freedom Fighters will be at home against San Ignacio United. The standings currently looks like this: Police continues to lead with 16 pts, Verdes FC has 14, the Bandits 13, B.D.F. 10, FC Belize 9, Paradise Freedom Fighters 6 and San Ignacio 4.

The 2014 Weekend Warriors Cross Country Cycle Classic travelled from Loma Luz Hospital to the Smart office on the Philip Goldson Highway yesterday for the 65 mile race. Barny Brown of Scotia Bank out sprinted the lead pack of 6 to take top honors. Coleman Williams of Smart pulled up 2nd, James Frampton of Santino’s finished 3rd, Big Mike Lewis also of santino’s 4th, kent Gabourel of Bennys 5th while Preston Martinez of Smart rounds out the top 6.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
