Guatemalan officials in Belize to investigate killing in Chiquibul

Wilfred Elrington

The recent killing of a Guatemalan national by Belize Defense Force personnel inside the Chiquibul forest has sparked renewed concerns by the international community about the existing border issues between Belize and Guatemala.  Since the incident a week ago, Guatemalan officials have been meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to look closely at what transpired between the soldiers and the poacher.  News Five understands that a pair of officials, sent by the Guatemalan government, is in the country to assist with the ongoing investigation.  This afternoon, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington commented on the status of the probe.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“The shooting in the Chiquibul area is a very, very serious matter and it can have consequences for us both domestically, as well as internationally because it is neither the first, second or third time that we have had a fatality involving Guatemalan citizens by the military.  That is of great concern to the Guatemalan public and also to the international community and so we have an obligation to do all in our power to make sure that the investigation of the incident is open and transparent and done as quickly as possible.  Two Guatemalans came over shortly after the incident and they witnessed the post mortem and they have been aware of the investigative activities that we have been taking and they have claimed that they have been sent by their authorities to offer their assistance, not to tell us what to do but to offer their assistance in any way they can to try to get at the facts and circumstances of the incident.  They have been here for, I think about two or three days, and I met with them yesterday to bring them up-to-date as to what we have been doing and we where we are in relation to this investigation.  I got the impression that they were quite content with what we told them.  They basically were present at the post mortem so they know the details in relation to the body of the deceased and we just gave them some information that we then had on how far the investigation has reached locally.”
