Opposition calls Anwar Barrow’s appointment at B.T.L. an act of nepotism

Anwar Barrow

The People’s United Party held a press conference at Independence Hall this afternoon. The topics up for discussion ranged from Elvin Penner to very internal politics. We’ll have all that for you, starting with a demand by P.U.P. Leader Francis Fonseca for Anwar Barrow’s appointment to be rescinded. Anwar Barrow, son of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, has been appointed Chairman of the Executive Committee of Management of B.T.L.  According to Fonseca, that is the basest and most blatant nepotism, and cannot be countenanced. But it is not only about Anwar Barrow. Fonseca says that this is just the latest in a series of appointments of and favours granted to the Prime Minister’s family members. He reminds the Prime Minister that nepotism is a form of corruption.

“Lois Young Barrow, the ex-wife of the Prime Minister, appointed to serve as Ambassador of the United Nations, and prior to that appointment, Belizeans will know that she served as the primary private legal counsel to the government of Belize, earning significant, substantial sums of money, reportedly millions of dollars, in that capacity. Shyne Barrow…I mean no disrespect but that is the name I am aware of…Jamal Shyne Barrow, son of the Prime Minister, appointed Music Ambassador of Belize after he was deported to Belize from the United States of America. We really don’t know where he is now, whether he continues to function in that capacity, but we know that appointment was made. Denys Barrow, the brother of the Prime Minister, appointed a Justice of the Court of Appeal of Belize. He subsequently resigned from that post and now serves as the primary, private legal counsel to the government of Belize. He has taken up that responsibility since Lois Young has now left…earning again, significant, substantial amounts of money…reportedly again millions of dollars. Kimano Barrow, a nephew of the Prime Minister, appointed to the Public Utilities Commission, and also reportedly a shareholder in a company which was granted an oil exploration license by this U.D.P. government. Naima Barrow, a niece of the Prime Minister…appointed to serve on the Election and Boundaries Commission and also appointed to serve on the Belize Broadcasting Authority. Liesje Barrow, another niece of the Prime Minister, appointed to serve on the Belize Advisory Commission. Nepotism is a form of corruption, and leaders should never place their family members in a position where those family members may be forced to factor in family relations or family considerations into their decision making.”

All well and good for Francis Fonseca to be mouthing off on nepotism. We want to hear PUP’s stance against this. Why doesn’t he publish that the PUP will campaign against this and prohibit it lawfully? We want to see that in the PUP Manifesto. Put your balls where your mouth is.

As I recall, Said Musa’s son Yasser Musa was put in charge of NICH and nobody uttered a peep. Close family friend and cohort Joan Duran Benet was made cultural ambassador under Said’s tenure. Nobody said a word, so what’s di big deal now?

Be fair, man. Cut the nonsense and cut it from your party as well. “Monkey see, monkey do,” you know. They learned it from your party.

Nepotism? When did become a problem?

How is Ali’s nephew doing on that oil & gas contract?

Is that not how it works in Belize, not what you know, but who you know?

Either this PM is really greedy for money or there is something else is happening here for have so many of his relatives in key positions. From what I understand there are factions within the UDP who wants to get rid of Dean and Dean has trust issues with his party. I guess He place his relatives(people he know he can trust) in key position of power to maintain his influence in the running of this country.

  7. Heavenlyblaq says:

This is how to put this situation into perspective; Dean Barrow and his family have Belize in a choke hold while his ministers repeatedly gang rape the country. My poor Belize will never recover once these criminals have walked off into the sunset.

  8. Joe says:

Hon. Fonseca you forgetting your years of government under the PUP..all we heard was Fonsecas, Musas, Espats, etc…how it tastes now?

Why not boycott the entire GOB?because it seems that the country is run by the Barrow family in other parts of the world where this happens they call it dictatorship. Young people wake and smell the coffee,Belize needs a peaceful and constructive revolution for the future of the young generation.
