P.U.P. comments on the Holy Emmanuel squatters

The Holy Emmanuel squatters, as they’ve been dubbed, have been prominent in the news for the past week. Their homes are being threatened by the massive infrastructural work which will see a bridge built over the Haulover Creek. The contractor has been patient, and has tried to fill around the homes until everything is sorted out. The squatters who must move say they have nowhere else to go. And the man who promised them titles for their land, politician Mark King, has not surprisingly washed his hands of the entire matter. So where does the P.U.P. stand in all this? Fonseca says it is something they have had to deal with in and out of government.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

Francis Fonseca

“There has to be a balance. I won’t be political about it. There has to be a balance. We have to treat our people…even when they are immigrants coming into our society…we have a responsibility to treat them with care and compassion. And in the case of the residents of the Holy Emmanuel area…a great majority of them are Belizeans…those who are not have Belizean children. Many of them…I know them personally. My constituency is on the other side…Freetown – Chetumal Street. So I know many of these people myself. They are hard working people trying to make ends meet. They are poor people. At the same time we are a country of laws, we have to apply the law, but we must do so with compassion. So I support the view as it relates to these individuals that if we are asking families to move because there is some infrastructure project or work that needs to be carried out let us do so in a responsible way. Let us try as best as possible to find alternative quarters for them to live. Land is very hard to come by. But as I know, when the UDP need to find land fu themselves they could find it quickly. I know in my own area in Freetown, in Belama…they have taken land away from so many people and given it to their own family members. So when they need to find land they know where to look and where to get it. And in this case they have a duty and an obligation to these people. In this case we’re dealing with so many children who live in that little community. And the government has an obligation to try and find a compassionate solution to that problem.”

These squatters need to go find a new location to occupy. They are in the way for a major construction zone. We cannot have some small number of people holding back development for the majority of people.
I know many of the immigrant parents here in Belize gave birth and will continue to give birth in order to gain benefits. These squatters don’t need much help, I am sure they can occupy new lands without help just like they have done on these lands.

I bet udp rush fi register these people as voters now why them no rush fi help them relocate? Give them another area to live and charge a small rent fee or something but treat them like human beings and not animals.

Well I guess that the many teachers and public officers who don’t have land and contribute daily to this society need to go and squat as well because time and time immigrants just come into our little blessed country and squat and then want to force the government to find land for them. This is outrageous. The fault lies with both political parties (UDP & PUP) who nationalize many of these immigrant, who in most instances can barely speak English, in order to get votes on election day. In this case I think that Francis must have taken an overdose of that simple pills cause we born Belizeans can’t go to any other country and go squat and then demand from the government that we want land.
