Healthy Livings looks at a Complimentary and Alternative Medicine

Complimentary & Alternative Medicine, or CAM, is a term used to describe non-mainstream health approaches. Some of these approaches are used together with conventional medicine – complementary and some are used in place of conventional medicine – alternative. In Belize the most common example is herbal medicine. We know many persons who swear by their herbal remedies. This is a form of CAM. Another alternative medicine spreading in Belize is the traditional Chinese medicine technique of acupuncture which uses thin needles to stimulate various points around the body as well as energy massages. Tonight on Healthy Living, we introduce another complementary medicine known as Reiki and the Belizean who’s offering this healing service.

“You have the ability to heal yourself. What reiki is that – the definition of it is rei meaning universal or spiritual consciousness and ki meaning energy or life force.”

Michelle Williams, is a certified Yoga instructor and Usui Reiki Master. She explainshow she discovered reiki when it was recommended to her as a complimentary treatment.

“I suffered from depression and a very strong form of depression and I went to many medical doctors—psychiatrists, psychologists—and I was always on medication and the medication would help me up to a point, but then either my body got used to it or the medication wasn’t exactly treating exactly what was my problem. So at one point, it was probably the lowest point in my life, about couple years ago, and with the help of my family and the support of my family and the encouragement of a therapist that I had in Miami, I went to kind of a hospital to deal with my depression. One of the reason why my therapist chose or recommended this particular place was because they offered holistic healing methods and eastern methods of healing as well as the western method so that I could be able to get a hand on both. My first Reiki experience was mind-blowing for me because I actually experienced no thought and that was pretty amazing and it lightened my whole being from that moment.”

Reiki had helped Michelle to reduce her medication for her chronic depression and as a result she was prompted to further her training in this form of healing.

“Always in the back of my mind I wanted to come back to Belize to offer this to Belizeans because I know that there are people that suffer from depression in Belize and it still has a stigma connected to it. I figured, if something has helped me it must be able to help somebody else. I think that there is this new wave in Belize where people are trusting a lot more holistic healing methods; feeling more comfortable with them. On TV, Doctor Oz…his wife is a Reiki healer and in every single surgery that he conducts, there is always a Reiki healer in his operating room. I never really worried about the reaction that I would get from Belizeans in a negative sense. I’ve never taken that into consideration because I was so convinced within my own healing and my own improvement. I knew that the difference that my friends would have seen in me would have been kind of in a sense proof enough.”

So how does it work? The Reiki master hovers his or her hands over the body’s energy centers or chakras. The person being treated will draw on the energy of the reiki master; the goal being to balance the energy in the body.

“I work with the chakras first; I do a scan of the body and basically feel where I feel energy and I take note of it and I work with the chakra. So I start with the crown chakra which is your understand; your connection to your higher power. Then I work with your third eye…do your throat chakra your heart chakra, your solar plexus chakra; your sacral chakra and your root chakra and they all signify different energy locks. If a chakra is unbalanced then your whole sense being is unbalanced. What it is really doing is its basically filling up your energy pathways with positive energy, good energy and loving energy. One of my first clients in Belize was a woman that suffered from chronic migraine and she had tried all the medications out there and it hadn’t helped. And she actually went to Merida and it was her medical doctor that said I am a man of science, but I am telling you that what you need in conjunction with a new medication would be Reiki healing. So she came to Belize and she was talking to a friend of hers and she said I don’t know what this is and luckily the friend that she was talking to was also my friend and she introduced me.”

It wouldn’t be the first time that medical doctors recommend complimentary medicine as a part of treatment. In fact, fifteen percent of American hospitals include reiki in pain management treatment. Michelle has recently opened a Yoga and Reiki center in Belize City; hoping that she can offer Belizeans this Japanese healing method.

“The only thing I can suggest is try it once; that’s the only thing I can suggest and see for yourself. I can tell you how much it has helped me and someone can tell you as much as they can how much it has helped them, but until you try it yourself, you really won’t know.”
