The murder victim is a seventeen year old footballer player, well known in the community and a former student of Gwen Lizarraga High School. Both sixteen year old Austin Rhaburn and seventeen year old Richard Waight Junior were stabbed in a brawl that started earlier that day in which it is alleged that machetes and knifes were pulled. “An incident occurred on the basketball court, which is very near to the police station in Hattieville. The end result of that incident is that two minors were injured; one of them unfortunately succumbed while being treated at the Karl Heusner. We have one person that is in our custody. We are working with the information that we’ve gathered from other persons that were around and we have contacted other branch, CIB Belize City and with their assistance, we are trying to cover the entire report before long.”

According to the family of deceased, the murder started from an earlier misunderstanding.

Richard Waight Sr.

“The thing start from one of his friend’s younger bredda. Wah young man weh mi di heng out dah the Brown Family, apparently he had some misunderstanding with one of his friend’s lee bredda over some ideal and he take wah machete and put it dah the lee bwai shirt and it supposed to cut ahn and the older bredda—of course that dah ih bredda—he punch up ahn. From there, I heard the young man haul out machete and run gone hail the other two. Now when ih gone hail the other two, dehn come with machete and knife and all kinda thing. Far way bigger guys because the one weh stab my lee son dah grown man. He like so much bigger to dehn young bwai. He just come out deh and first thing he do dah rush after the two ah dehn and juk dehn.”

Austin Rhaburn

Sixteen year old Austin Rhaburn, who was along with Waight and his eleven year old sibling, was also stabbed to the lower right abdomen. Rhaburn has been treated and released from the hospital. But for the family of Waight Junior, they are trying to come to grips with the reality.

Richard Waight Sr.
“The other young man, he lee bit taller than my son. Because it di come the same range, it ketch my lee son around ih heart area and the other young man get it lee lower. So my lee son end up fatal.  Mien, all of them grow up together. All of them mess with each other every time. Dah noh like dehn noh know one another mien. I tell yo how dehn chance my lee son, bwai. I tell yo.”

A knife, believed to be the murder weapon, has been recovered and two persons, a man and another sixteen year old minor, have since been detained in connection with this homicide. Duane Moody for News Five.
