School and Ministry of Education ask who’s responsible

E’Jahmor Lopez

According to school officials, two students who were on the trip have had to be hospitalized. It is an extremely serious matter, and the parents of Edgar Puck and Anahi Zepeda are holding the school responsible. It is still too early to say whether that will have legal implications, but it is possible. What we can say at this point is that the school and the Ministry of Education are treating the matter with gravity. Today, the school’s management and representatives from the ministry were in an all-day session to get some answers and figure out who’s responsible.

E’Jahmor Lopez, Education Center Manager, Corozal

“For any educational trip permission has to be given by the Ministry. There is a procedure…there is a form that has to be completed by the school. The principal has to give approval…in this case the Board Chair would also sign and then the Ministry has to review all the documentation ensuring that a licensed vessel, in this case a bus, is taking the students…that there is enough seating, that they have gotten the requisite permission from the places they are going to be visiting, etc. And then once we are satisfied that everything is in place we give our approval. And so the documentation that we have…they met all the requirements and approval was given for that group to go to Che Chem Ha, which is an archaeological site in Benque Viejo.”

Mike Rudon

“In what direction would an investigation into this matter be focused? Determining liability? What’s the purpose of the investigation?”

E’Jahmor Lopez

“Well the purpose of the investigation is to gather the facts. Whenever there is any incident, whether minor, major or something tragic like this, all stakeholders want answers…parents, relatives, the school community, the ministry…we want answers. And so the purpose of the investigation is to gather all the evidence possible and for us to determine the way forward.”

Both Anahi and Edgar were buried on Sunday.

  4. StandUp says:

Responsibility lies right where the rubber meets the road, with the teachers. Can’t blame the govt for that. The students are under the care of the teachers, who made that decision then didn’t keep close enough eye. Very very sad. Two kids gone. I’m sure everyone involved feels deep regret, but the responsibility lies with adult decision makers, full stop.

@beliveinbelize. Man mi ingles es malo but your one is really bad. Before you call someone stupid read what you are sending. I agree the prime minister is human but thats why he is corrupto como todos too much temptation when you have power.

  6. Paulino says:

    So True:
Why Always blame the Government. Everybody has a choice and freedom. Even God Gave man choice to choose from. If we learn to make the right choices everything will work out better and get better.

  7. Jesus says:

For a fact it is illegal to allow students to swim on field trips. The adults that allowed need to be held accountable. Hope it is not a case of disobedient students which should have not be taken to the trip. There is no need for this to happen again.

  8. unknown says:

i think dis is responsibility of the teacher incharge since there was no need to stop at a river wich we all kno is very dangerous…
