Reymundo Reyes

A third person lost his life in the west due to drowning. On Sunday afternoon, thirty-three year old Francisco Martin Juan went swimming with his uncle near the Belize Old River in an area near the football field at Santa Familia Village. The Guatemalan national, who resided in the village, was reportedly intoxicated when he attempted to swim across the river but was pulled under by the current. Residents in the area, along with police, conducted a search and discovered Juan’s body some thirty minutes later. Deputy O.C., San Ignacio Police, Inspector Reymundo Reyes, spoke to News Five today about the unfortunate event.

“Sometime around one p.m., acting upon information received, San Ignacio Police visited the Santa Familia Village, near the football field by the Belize old River, where information was received that one, Francisco Martin Juan, thirty-three years old Guatemalan National went along with his uncle, Jose Miguel Gaspar, forty-eight years old also of Guatemala to the river to take a bath. Allegedly, what he uncle is reporting is that, he was under the influence of alcohol. He entered the water and whilst attempting to cross the river, it appears that the current took him down and he never resurfaced. As a result of the information, a team of civilians from Santa Familia assisted police in diving and trying to locate the body. Sometime around one-forty p.m., about two hundred yards from where he was last seen, the body was retrieved and it was escorted to the San Ignacio Town Hospital where it was pronounced dead on arrival by Doctor Ramirez.”
