In 2013, the number of murders fell significantly below the hundred mark but since the beginning of the year, crime figures are creeping up. According to our count, there have been twenty-one recorded murders countrywide, including eleven in Belize City. The latest murder victim is Anfernee Romero, who was gunned down on Thursday at around five o’clock at his place of work on Central American Boulevard.  As we reported in our previous newscast, Romero was along with Troy Hyde when two men opened fire on them. Duane Moody reports.

“Another statistic was added to the murder count for the Old Capital following a shooting on Central American Boulevard on Thursday evening. Eighteen year old Anfernee Romero, who lived a stone’s throw from where he was shot, did not survive the injuries from gunshots to the left side of the head. The grieving family told us off camera that Anfernee was the eldest in the family and had recently relocated to the City from Sand Hill, where his mother currently resides.

Police are reporting that Romero was along with twenty-six year old Troy Hyde at this garage, Locksmith Service, located on the boulevard, when at least eight shots were fired in their direction. The shooting occurred just before five p.m. when two male persons riding on separate bicycles, wearing blue T-shirts and brandishing weapons reportedly entered the workshop and unleashed the gunfire on the men before fleeing the scene. Moments later, police arrived, cordoned off the area and the crime investigation team began processing the scene—recovering several shells left at the scene. Both Romero and Hyde were rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital; Anfernee perished while receiving treatment, while Hyde remains hospitalized. Hyde, a resident of Curl Thompson Street, in the Jane Usher Boulevard Area, was hit multi

ple times to the body…one of the bullets lodged on his spine. When we spoke with his mother today, she told us that he was in a serious, but stable condition and that she was at work when she received the news of the shooting and that her son was injured. The motive of the crime has still not been determined.”

Eighteen year old Romero participated in the Youth Apprenticeship Program of the Ministry of Education under the supervision of Dianne Finnegan.
