Mark King promises squatters land titles

Residents of the area, all squatters, have told News Five that Area Representative Mark King conducted a survey late last year. They say that they were even given house numbers, and promised title for their pieces of land. And that’s why they feel especially aggrieved by new developments which threaten their homes. They feel betrayed, and frustrated, and angry…more so because they haven’t been able to contact Mark King. But did King actually make promises, or are the residents all wrong? In what must be the most supreme irony, today News Five got hold of a recording of Mark King in a meeting with those very same residents. We say it’s ironic because King is known to be quite prone to recording conversations, but now he’s on the receiving end. In the recording, King assures squatters that if government moves them, it will  have to move him too.

Mark King, Area Representative, Lake Independence

“People that have land in the Gungulung Area were worried because I think most of them were wondering if we were going to kick them off their land because of the government project. Well I’m happy to tell you that is not so. Right? What we will do…I think most of you have seen a guy Mr. Marin here in the back here. He is surveying the land, and when he is done surveying the land, for you people who are on the land all I will do is give you your papers. Right? That is what I promised you before elections. And if the government moves you then they will have to move me because all of us would protest my own government. Remember when I went to protest my own City Council? They called me crazy right? But I will keep my promise to you guys. So at the end of the day all of you who live just across the creek in Gungulung…you are going to get your land title very soon.”

In political language, very soon is a relative term which can stretch endlessly. And right now, time is not on the side of residents.

I have a better idea. Why don’t you all take all the money all of you have been stealing and buy the land for them outright. It’s a win win situation. The people get their land, you get popularity in spite of being nothing but a thug, and the government get back a small fraction of their money. Sorry, correction, our money!

so we who buy land, pay taxes and respect others land rights must subsidize these who just see an empty land and go live on it? then cry when the owner comes? how facey-let them work and buy it or go back from whence they came. We Belizeans cant get a piece and these immigrants come and get it? I am sure Rod will say see how this government treats spanish, but fuck-they are getting facey by the day-they should leave- I HATE SQUATTERS

  4. Bull says:

Why don’t you give all of us a piece of land then? Maybe I go squat and you just hand me the papers to it when you locate me. Since it seems you are encouraging squatting and actually rewarding them. Belize is going to waste with all these people and encouraging illegal stuff all over the place. It is not theirs, they are stealing, who told them to go squat in the first place? Let them rant n rave, it’s not like they were all innocent, they know what they were doing when they decided to go squat. Kick them out one by one. I don’t have my own property, but you dont see me squatting

Some years agi I too left my country and migrated to the US. Guess what guys l had to and am still paying for a piece of land that america will never let me claim muchless gi SQUAT on someone else land and call it my own because my four children are born here so in my small mind I believe I have rights to their country therefore before the ink dries on my visa papers I will claim a piece of their country. Why not just go do so in wherever they are from.I am a Belizean left Belize for better had a peopery I had put a lot of my hard earned dollers into. Now that property is owned by foreign squatters. Foreget the mud slinging pilitcking, I too waded into mud to develop what U taught would be mine a Belizean. By the way the PUP was in power

  6. Sean Jones says:

If people are squatting is because there is no opportunities to own a property, only Mark King can do so. It’s amazing to see all the comments and how bad minded people can be! These people are legal here in the country, they are Belizeans like it or not. Belize is made of immigrants!! where do you think all of you come from????What if they would do the same to you and your family that lives in the USA????
