PM says the EU needs to get its act together on fisheries sanction

Dean Barrow

The European Union earlier this week imposed fisheries sanctions on Belize because the country has been found not to be cooperating in the fight to stop illegal fishing. The government jumped to the defense saying that all necessary steps have been taken to eradicate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. According to the Prime Minister, the EU Council is relying on old information and had not taken into account certain new measures adopted by Belize like the passing of the High Seas Fishing Act.  Prime Minister Barrow today said that he is not having sleepless night over the ban.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I’m not especially worried except, I think the EU does need to get its act together. You can’t send a team down here, you can’t have an understanding reached; you can’t offer assurances by way of that team that certain things will happen…not happen and then within a couple of weeks, you go back on your word. But the practical effect of what has been done is not of a kind of consequence that unduly worries me. You are talking about a small number of ships, part of the fishing fleet, that can’t now access European Ports. In the larger scheme of things, really it is not something to be especially concerned about.”

Cambodia and Guinea were the other two countries on which the fisheries ban was also imposed.

How about the fishermen that live of fishing? The PM said that he is not having sleepless night over the ban, because it won’t affect him it will affect the poor fishermen.
